Photos of January 2013 WD

Postby RotweillerofJustice » Fri Dec 21, 2012 6:20 pm

OK. So I've waited a couple of days to see if anyone else was going to post this but has anyone else seen the pictures that have been posted up to dakadaka and other forums showing new DA releases in next months WD?

http://www.thedarkfortress.co.uk/tech_r ... models.htm

I'm of the same opinion as to this article on the dark fortress. Some of the models look very nice indeed but others are a bit naff. Belial for example looks like he is in need of wee!

The one thing I am really liking though is the Dark Talon fighter.
What about you guys?

The photos wouldn't download for me. :(

Some of the models do look nice, but I agree that Belial looks odd - is he surrendering? The toes in look does make it look like he busting for the loo too.

Some nice looking stuff. I can see what you're saying about Belial. And while the pose does look very static... I think the awkwardness of it could be the angle of the pic and that it's on the curve of the page.

The Dark Talon looks alright. But I think GW a starting to go overboard with flyers... actually with a lot of things. Not going to be long before every named chapter will have unique vehicle and weapon variants. :/ No offence to Dark Angels players.. They do deserve a Dex update.

The speeder thing looks wierd, lol. But I'll probably get one for conversion into something eventually...

Really liking the Termies and Bikes. But then DA alway had pretty ones.

But I guess this will mean my wallet is gonna take another 2D6 hits with no money save allowed...

Just found them on another website. I see what you mean about Belial, its just not very dynamic at all, it looks like he's got two wooden legs! Like the Dark Talon, definately better than that godawful Storm Talon, still aerodynamically impossible but that's GW for you. There appears to be an awful lot of boltguns under the wings, looks like its got two hurricane patterns on it. The Landspeeder thing, what were they thinking?! That is terrible! Probably be an uber machine though so I reckon I'll end up getting one. Love the Deathwing Knights, wonder if they're going to be an upgrade to standard Deathwing? Cna't wait to get my grubby little mitts on the new Codex to see how it all works.

Why do people apply realistic laws to models representing futuristic vehicles? Hundreds of years ago the smartest people in the world thought the world was flat and got it wrong, who's to say that in 40000 they haven't revised the laws of flight?

Plus to be honest it thrust > drag + a little lift = flight. Not efficient flight granted but it would fly.

On the models I am going to break my mold and say that I don't like any of them! I am starting to think that GW are losing there touch.

As a Die Hard Dark Angel player, I've been waiting a very long time for this.
Must admit I have mixed feelings on what I've heard and seen.

Like:
Death Wing Terminators & Knights - great sculpts and good use of style, will be adding a unit of Knights to my force. Plus can now go 10 man squads!!

Raven Wing - more bikes is always a good thing, hopefully be able to take as Troops, rival the White Scars in lightning strikes - got to love Command squad without having to kit bash as I'm not a brilliant modeller.

Flyer - at first I was a bit disappointed, like with the Storm Talon, but starting to come round to liking it - this one will come down to the rules and how it fits it's role (same feelings I had with the Heldrake but now it's a standard fixture in my chaos army)

The rest I'm disappointed with, characters are very static and I won't be replacing my existing models, Landspeeders will never appear in my collection, absolutely horrible - Design Quality is terrible, agree this where I lose faith with GW, it's even like the mid 80s craziness. Should have left it to ForgeWorld to produce....

Otherwise, it looks like 2013 will be my year of playing Dark Angels, even looking to start a 2nd Founding offshoot using the Dark Vengence models.

Al, while I agree that it is a fantasy type game and so realistic models give way to artistic license for aesthetic purposes, there is no way that it would achieve supersonic flight, the wings are too far forward and the wrong shape which would lead to severe instability in transonic flight. Forward swept wings can work, look at the X-29, but they have to be at the back of the plane and properly swept forward, not just the trailing edge. You could stick massive engines on it which would provide enough thrust to provide lift but it would handle like a barge (and increase drag due to the larger intakes) and you would need a LOT of thrust to overcome its inherent un-aerodynamic shape (there are far to many large flat areas which would cause massive drag). Sticking bigger engines on it increases all up weight which means you need bigger wings and/or more thrust to overcome this, its a vicious circle when it comes to the flight envelope. Still, it is a nice model.

I don't have a problem with GW's lack of aerodynamics. They have already talked about sophisticated anti gravity technology. Who's to say that they don't have inertial dampners? I'd imagine the two technologies are linked. I know I'm referencing more fiction here... but look at the Death Gliders in Stargate SG1 or the Jumpers in Stargate Atlantis. Neither of those should fly really. same goes for alot of Sci-Fi.

I have to agree that My complaint is with GW aesthetics recently, not with 'will it fly?'

Nathaniel, the Death Glider does fly, sort of. They used radio controlled models for it. You look at the shape of it though and it is aerodynamic. You can get just about anything to fly, I have seen radio controlled flying lawnmowers, its just it wouldn't fly very well. Like I said I do understand that it is aesthetics and fantasy, and I do get all the techno babble drivel, and I reckon it would fly, just not very well! I still like the model, a lot better then the other GW SM fliers at any rate. Still not as nice as the Cylon Raider, sorry Necron Scythe.

True. I had thought about converting a Talon into a Colonial Viper at one point, lol

I think he looks fine. What I find odd is virtually all other space marines having bow legs!
Anyhow, I like some models, others look rather wrong. The real kick in the wallet are the prices. Just no.

I have to say, as a DA player - these look appalling! The Termies are not TOO bad, same with the flyers- BUT what were they smoking when they designed the new Vengeance skimmer and the "super-static" pose characters? They just look terrible. I think I'll stick to the models I have and stay in 5th ed still if this is the stuff GW are coming up with! Just my two pence . . . . .

Not a fan of the New Speeder, although I imagine it has awesome rules, so will be the next must have!

No such thing as must have in my book. Maybe I lack the genuine love of 40k of a "real" gamer!
