To be honest I'm not overly excited about Spearhead.

Super Heavy Spearhead Formation - is a Warhound titan classed as a super heavy?

I'm getting confused as to how this all works, at first I fought that Spearhead was a completely sepearte game featuring tanks / MC only but it looks like its an extension to the 'normal' 40K game, is this correct?

If so how does force organisation work? Do I still need 1 HQ and 2 troops, am I still restricted to 3 Elite/ FA / HS slots?

Dedicated transports - if I run 3 squads of IG vets mounted in Chimeras - this uses up all my HS slots, correct?

Spearhead = 3 set-up types and 3 mission types. Missions are either objective or get into the other deployment zone

Set-up is lengthways and either 18" apart, 12" apart or 18" apart in a cone shaped (funnel) zone.

Force selection is
0-2 HQ
0-6 Troops
0-3 Elite
0-3 FA
0-3 Heavy
0+ spearhead formations but only 1 of each type

That's it.

Those are the basically the rules.

It's very simple (much like how most of GW games are going), you can take a normal FOC army if you want, but none of the restrictions are applied; you don't have to take a HQ or any Troops.
Plus attached to this you can take upto 12 Spearhead formations (only 1 of each is allowed).

as mentioned by Matt, 3 setups and 3 missions played down the length of the table.
Couple of special rules for vehicles and MC types to let them move faster than normal and shoot.

For me being an Imperial Guard Player and Tyranid Monstrous Creature player for decades, this is heaven.

For Example my Imperial Guard Spearhead could consist of (with 1 purchase of Manticore on 5th June):

Armoured Spearhead (5+ Invulnerable Save) 3 x Leman Russ Vanquishers with Lascannon 570pts
Tank Hunter Spearhead (Tank Hunter USR) 3 x Leman Russ Battle Tanks with Lascannon 555pts
Mechanised Assault Spearhead (Outflank) 2 x Chimera with Veteran Squad 3xMelta + Demolitions 430pts
Ambush Spearhead (Stealth+Infiltraate) 3 x Leman Russ Battle Tanks with Lascannon + HeavyBolters 630pts
Outrider Spearhead (Bodyguard) 1 x Manticore + 2 x Sentinels with Multi-laser 290pts
Super-Heavy Spearhead 1 x Bane Blade 500pts
Total 2975pts

Cheers guys, thanks for the explainations.

Don't have my apocolypse book with me (at work) - can I use a Warhound titan and or a Thunderbolt?

To take the titan would would need to take the Super-heavy spear head selection. You cannot have more than one type of spearhead so you couldn't then take additional super-heavy.

Essentially, you can choose 0-1 super heavy from the apocalypse book.

Gosh I like the lightning strike.. move 24 gain cover and still be able to shoot a single shot.. that fits really nicely with the list I can't play anymore due to our meta.
I think the blokes who are given str7 krak grenades cost a bit much, but i'm guessing a cheeky chappy would do that to 3 30 man squads who don't have kraks normally.
Taking 750 of warhound seems a bit rude.. although I like the way it fits in.
Tau thing of skimmers always hitting the side armour..sounds fairly cool (not too scared by it)
I like the way their example is a different version of something with the same name on the next page..lol.Confusing.

There are some nice things in here. Cheers for the find/copy link

Mort, you can't use the Thunderbolt, at least not yet. It doesn't fit any of the just released Spearhead formations. As Matt says though you can take 1 Warhound.

KMB, Socaddict posted the link up in IRC this morning, I'm not sure where he got it from but I can't take credit :P

"When selected as part of a spearhead, dedicated transports count as Heavy Support units instead, and therefore are selected without a transported unit."
Ok so this might make sense for wave serpents.. and tenously even for chimeras.. a block of them as heavys with +1 str to all their weapons would be pretty bad ass (and a lot cheaper than dakka preds)
But well.. I wouldn't use it.
(firstly rhinos suck and won't gain anaything apart from maybe the "counts as rammining at av15")(mechanised assualt spearhead) but imagine you have 3 waveserpents (no delay they turn up turn 1 which is a big downside and you still have to roll for sides... and they must have people in and they must take up your 3 heavy slots.. so .....isn't that worse than what eldar currently do?

Also as avian (warseer) pointed out..lol cakes on outrider thats for tanks and walkers and has a falcon and vypers in the picture.. (since vypers aren't tanks..what did they have in mind as the tyrand guards for tanks any ideas?I thought the intro said they all had to be the same tank?)

Makes my brain hurt... but still a lot of them look fun.

Oh, I didn't think that taking a spearhead cut into the other choices. I thought they were in addition to the rest of the FOC. Maybe I got that wrong?

That's what the WD article suggests anyway. I can't see anything in that link in the OP which says otherwise.
EDIT: looks like the Eldar army in the batrep in WD also supports this. Spearheads are in addition to the FOC maximums.

Unless I'm completely missing something.

I'd assume the reference to them counting as Heavy Support units is for the missions rules, for instance if you can only deploy Troops on the table then that would prevent a Spearhead formation of Chimeras being put down with the player claiming they should count as Troops due to them being available to Infantry Platoons; by GW stating they are all Heavy Support it cuts out any arguing.

I'm tempted to try to pick up WD tomorrow morning, I can't get to the local store today.
