all the different GW websites are (apparantly) going to be updated to match the new US one.

i heard (online) that the Ltd Ed SM would eventually become available in the UK, back when it appeared on the US site. AFAIK you will need to spend £50 to get him, and i expect quantities to be limited.

hope that helps :)

p.s. @ Ben: have our SMs arrived?

Not yet. :(

They will most likely show up with the Gamer's packs.

I called to see if they still had them kicking around. The GW guy (Do we still call them phone trolls?) said that there were tons of them kicking around. Apparently in the US the allure of a Space Marine hailing a cab was not enough to make people want to order from GW. The feeling I got from the worker was that 5th preorders haven't been much of the success they had hoped. I blame Monsterpocalypse.

fair enough - i dont mind as long as they havent sold out. :)

i dont blame them to be honest - unless its something i cant buy anywhere else (like Direct Only models, Gamer's Edition etc), why wouldnt i get it cheaper elsewhere? its not even a case of brand (dis)loyalty, as im still buying GW.

since they dropped/cut back the bitz ranges, they havent left me much cause to buy direct at all. :(

personally i think the free model is quite cool, but people have to ask themselves whether its worth losing the 20+% discount that they could get elsewhere. i know i wouldnt have gotten one if the Gamer's Edition was available from my local indie.

hmm, i hadnt heard of that. looks like a bit of fun, but i wouldnt have imagined it would scare GW too much (unless it takes off like pokemon)...

When you put a dollar figure on it. If you place the minimum order of $100 to get the model instead of 20% off you are paying $20 for it. Add in taxes if you have a GW store in your state and any cost above the $100 and the model quickly becomes higher.

I don't know that it has scared GW. It is really getting a lot of hype in the States. They are having a big release at GenCon (which is already a big event) and there are a lot of people that are flying to GenCon just to play and get the limited edition model. Privateer Press is just a small fry but then again so was Wizards of the Coast in the early 90's.

In my area many people have said they are not going to pick up 5th edition because they don't like the changes and it allows them to save money for Monsterpocalypse. Will it be sustained? I don't know but it a "collectible" game like D&D minis and Magic the Gathering so they can just pop out new ones.

Can anyone tell me the story behind Pokemon? Someone at work mentioned that it had an impact but I can't believe this?!

I don't think Monster Apoc is the game for me :)

Not sure I understand the scope of your question
Financially, pokemon took 15 billion dollars (till 1997 quarter) http://money.cnn.com/2007/09/12/news/co ... /index.htm
thats a lot of money not going to other toys and games, it made its way through merchandising until a lot of teens and early twenties had some form of the game (whether it was card trading or trying to get the gold import yada yada thing for their monster upgrades for a game boy). I only played on it once and I found the passive violence a bit contradictory and didn't get on well with it...
But there is only so much space for disposable income (which appears to be a diminishing qauntity at the mo) to spend on a very select section of the market (toys that are not to do with things that go ping or that plug into a console or that can drive you at 20 miles an hour) and GW probably counts its competitors....If i played a different game it would either be one of the old obsolete GW ones or that 40k like one set in a cowboy town after nukes have gone off, that has a really nice defiler model (i'm not at home so can't remember its name but the rules are free based on the premise that you buy their models)

Situation with 5th ED pre-orders is a bit of a concern, would be nice to see the share price recover somewhat.

Perhaps GW will try releasing some online code for their MMORPG with miniatures in the future

on the subject (tangent?) of Pokemon, i was at a car boot sale last weekend: there were 2 brothers selling off their Pokemon cards (i bought a few interesting ones ) and someone else selling a Pokemon book. there were probably videos/computer games too, but i wasnt looking. however, not a single person was selling anything GW related...

another thing about Pokemon is that it acted as a gateway to other card games (Magic, im supposing) - instead of GW games acting as a gateway to the wargaming hobby. this meant that they didnt just lose money to Pokemon that would otherwise have been spent on GW, they also lost potential hobbyists who went down a different route.

I saw an episode of the TV show at a friends house and "innocently" asked his wife if the show was about cock fighting or dog fighting because I was confused since they had both going on.

5th may be doing very well everywhere else. GW does not sell well generally in the US. I think a big part is we are all cheap and another part is we try to turn just about everything into a contest of me against you. GW games are played at tournaments naturally but they are not designed for such a game. They are "beer and pretzels" style not "I will crush you" style..

The share price will recover just as soon as GW starts paying a dividend. They have a lot of institutional investors and since GW isn't going to grow much larger they want some steady income.

Do you normally see GW items at a Car Boot Sale? In the States, our Garage Sales (the one time we don't use our cars) normally sell things for so little that it would be a bit foolish to sell models. You can get much more off of eBay.

I personally think Pokemon was more of an excuse. The company wasn't adjusting to the changing marketplace and so they just pointed a finger and said "it's their fault" instead of taking the blame. This changed in the most recent annual report when Kirby said they were "fat and lazy".

Nice. I picked up Sgt Centurious on eBay for £3.50 as it was mislabelled, which is my best bargain yet :)

I might have said something more along the lines of complacent to a point of naivety, and shifting the policies that had attracted their core foundation base (that includes staff...with the loss of most bits of discount I'm still waiting for the redshirts to become homogenised disney store spotty types instead of the specialist spotty types etc)
I hope they get better soon, but if they couldn't do well over the last 5 years the next two don't look that great market wise.
I've never seen any appear on car boots, I've not seen much of worth at all since ebay came along to help get specialist stuff to specialist people..(but my brother in law goes to them weekly.)
