The BBFC also has odd rules. Take Attack of the Clones - it was rated a 12A with the headbutt between Jango and Obiwan left in, yet a PG when removed. Yet The Matrix was reduced from an 18 to 15 by removing a headbutt. It makes no sense - a headbutt should be classified in a single band (eg a headbutt will mean a 12A rating), not a +1 modifier!

I'm fairly tolerant of the BBFC, as unlike in the 80s it seems to actually understand (as a set criteria) "real" violence vs funny violence.
Example not of BBFC judgement but of the spectrum of judgemen (using spacks only one type of head butt)
True romance, where the woman is beaten to a pulp, very gritty.. very personal, very claustrophobic you see bruises and stuff.
Sin city, plasters guy head butts a cop, but he's wearing a face mask (we are desensitised to him being just one of a million, we don't have the austin powers ness of them giving that one henchman a back story, we don'tsee any damage..our hero is just on a charge away from overwhelming odds..in a cleary fantasicall escape.
2 head butts, one of which most of my friends won't watch.

(I'm going to watch grifters on thursday, haven't seen it since i was 12.. the bad dude makes angelica housten wear a rain coat so that whilst he's beating her if she loses bowel control she won't make a mess of his rug.. thats a pretty messed up scene- some younger certifications get around it by having so much implied they are actually vastly more unsettling).
Other examples, black blood used in the japanese bit of kill bill, because red visceral would create too much impact for it to be passed. Or Planet terror where the amount of tomato ketchup flying at walls (what previously was called splat gore horror) is perfectly acceptable because they get the joke, there isn't any deep seated trauma in it and the more they let loose the funnier it is (compared to the needle and eye bit which is just freaky).
I like 10,000 bullets resulting in a dam of blood, I hate to see bruises.. and the BBFC seems (for the last 7 years or so ) to be on the same wavelength.
Remember in the 90s..when people were adding swear words.. just so that things were more adult ..some of the sci-fi then was 18 just because the script writer gots his rocks off saying "^(^" twice.. becuaswe he didn't want kids to watch it (the reverse also being true and violence getting through as long as no sex or swearing etc)..its much saner now..
(that said I still don't understand 12a's or their purpose other than to increase box office receipts..your either old enough to see violence and adult themes like S+M by yourself, either by smuggling yourself in underage, or your not..I got in to see terminator 2 (15) but was turned away from days of thunder (12).. I thank my lucky stars for that..go to IMDB and see how certifications are fairly random, with some countries giving something an 18 others give a pg too :D) And every end purchasor ignores computer games certs, (like the industry ignored manga, testical chomping spider genitalia bestial demon sex and thought it was a pg till the late 80s. :D)

That all said, I'm sure someone out there is getting cross and saying I'm perpetuating the myth of cartoon violence and that it should have a cause and effect.. but meh..I don't want to see Wile E. Coyote screaming in agony and covered in 4th degree burns in an oxygen tent.

Now that I'd like to see :P

My wife and I find over the top violence somewhat humorous, which probably explains why I have stuff like Dead Or Alive and Ichi The Killer in my DVD collection alongside Wall-E (they are actually on the same shelf right now, it wasn't intentional though!). I've just bought the Director's Cut of Watchmen from the US for the additional footage which adds a bit more violence into some of the fight scenes. But I'm also not a raving psycho who goes around attacking people, and so I don't have any need to go blaming movies/games/random weather effects for my behaviour. I personally think people are all too quick to blame anything else other than take responsibility for their own actions.

But with all those swords on your wall, Spack, you're in the perfect position to do something.

Just think about those darn neighbours and their sodding dog or something...

All I was saying is that violence has a context and should be judged in it, rather than by tick box qauntities.

I went to a psychology conference once (only once).. and there was an interesting speaker.. who said that the children involved in the bulger murder..hadn't actually seen the childs play films, the closest they got was one step father had the soundtrack on cd/tape. The rest was apparently media whispers (Its tricky to work stuff like that out now the interweb is vanishing and self removing. e.g. I can no longer find the picture of the lady being sedated by the nurse after the sinking of the kursk (the picture has been removed from everywhere..inc the CNN archives)

That said I put my god mother in sticky situation when I came down and proudly told her(in front of her mum) that her 9yr old had just managed to beat up the pimps to get the prozzer to the VD clinic in GTA which she'd just bought for him.(he's at med school now :D)

I remember reading about a case, where a deeply religious bloke took his baby round to friends and watched snow white and the seven dwarves.
Something clicked in his head about 7 and dwarves or something, which brought about a bit of an Abraham complex...and you can guess the rest.

I don't think the portrayal of violence on-screen will do much to incite violence.

I think modes of behaviour can be far more insidious and enter the subconscious far more readily.
Like vengeance films.
"You trod on my toe in the bus queue, m*********r!" Bang dead.
It seems to me that the level of violence that would be appropriate in what could be a relatively minor problem has increased.

I watched "Men behind the sun"* a few weeks back and, despite it's comical script, sums it up for me.

*An odd film, about unit 731, semi-docu/action/propaganda, not quite sure. Anything about 731 is going to be nasty and heavy going. I decided to watch it (after consideration) as a bit of a "rite of passage", I suppose.
If you are at all squeamish/a cat lover, do not watch it. :|

I wonder if they will get it done this time. They did try to make a film quite a few years ago now, though it was gonna be Blood Angles (I think it was called Bloodquest, it appeared in some white dwarfs). They kept running out of funds & time or something, then one day they scrapped it...

Personally I think a movie for 40K should focus on the inner workings of the Imperium, rather than the 'war' aspects. I am a big fan of Abnet's Eisenhorn, I think a film based on these books would be ace (with Bruce Willis as Eisenhorn - Me & a mate unanimously agreed)! :D

Saying that I believe films based on the Horus Heresy books would be awesome too, & much better than a 'random' film about the Marines, especially one so short. But hey, it just needs the right director to find a copy of any of these books & enjoy reading them... Anyone got Peter Jackson's address!!!!
