Barahammer: Instant Death & Massive Damage

Postby Baragash » Sat Jul 23, 2011 5:21 pm

So I was pondering characters/Eternal Warrior/Instant Death (it was actually triggered by looking at the new WH FW Dragon Magestrix and TK Special Characters where Ward Saves for expensive models are noticeable by their scarcity, but I digress......)

Instant Death

Certain weapons and abilities in the Warhammer 40,000 universe are so powerful and dangerous that they can strike an opponent down with a single blow, a mere scratch, or otherwise remove them rather comprehensively from existence.

A model that suffers Instant Death is removed as a casualty regardless of the number of wounds it has remaining. Note that Instant Death is typically caused by suffering an unsaved wound from a source that inflicts Instant Death, where this is not the case the rules will specify how it works.

Massive Damage

Weapons such as missile launchers, lascannons, railguns and other powerful alien devices deliver so much damage to an individual target that they can obliterate it in a single hit if they are skilled or lucky enough to score a direct hit.

A model that suffers an unsaved wound by a weapon whose Strength is at least twice the victim's Toughness suffers Massive Damage. The wounded model must pass a Toughness test or be removed as a casualty regardless of the number of wounds it has remaining.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------

IMO this would solve certain problems that have not yet been resolved eg Tyranid Warriors and other mid-sized, multi-wound models; Expensive characters without Eternal Warrior being considered either risky or unplayable.

Yes, other rules would need to be changed to make them fit as well, but I'm more interested in the principle of this idea at the moment. Thoughts?

Interesting idea Baragash.
So for massive damage there would be 3 rolls, to hit, to wound, and suffer massive damage.
So then would feel no pain work against being removed due to massive damage?

At this point I was planning on keeping the relationship the same, so FnP wouldn't work against Massive Damage (I think that would neuter the power of heavy weapons vs infantry too much).

Its novel, and from rumours this kind of split tier of eternal warrior and insta death is where 6th ed is heading, BUT.. your version seems to massively focus on toughness 4 and 5. (not above because no doubles exist) Not below because they would just insta fail the test (a bit like the apoc sheet with T1-2 zombies with FNP).
I welcome the idea for ogryns and nid warriors. It seems to put 5"s of steel over Grotesques only weakness.
And it doesn't rein in bloodcrushers.
Generally positive- but I'm not going to adopt it.
Barely even lurking..

After some discussion elsewhere I've suggested a change to:

A model that suffers massive damage must roll under it's toughness on a D6. If the model wasn't eligible to take it's Armour Save against the wound (eg because it was a Power Weapon or the AP was too low) then add +1 to the dice roll.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Bloodcrushers have Eternal Warrior, they're outside the scope of this, besides which, given that the Daemon Codex is so poor, I've no interest in shafting BC ;)

Under the original rule a T3 model would have had a 50-50 chance of passing, which isn't insta-fail by any means ;) Now they have a 1/3 or 1/6 chance (depending on save. This is still a better chance than they have under the current rules... ie none ;) IMO a human should be more squishy than a SM or Nid.
