Diceless 40k !

Postby Dav0r » Fri Mar 05, 2010 10:31 pm

Hi all,

After reading this thread by LordMalekTheRedKnight, I thought you might find that of interest. This is my try to experiment some 40k games without using a single dice :)

At this moment I didn't write the rules for all the codices, but there are the core rules, plus Space Marines how-to.

Click here : Diceless 40k to download the pdf file.

All comments appreciated. Those rules are experimental of course, and there is a lot of room for improvements, but they already work well : I played some little games with them, and unit deployment, movement and tactics are really crucial :)

I had a quick read at the opening sections. You've put a lot of work into this Dav0r! I got the impression that it might suit smaller games (2-3 squads per side) as it might actually take longer to calculate than with using dice so big games might get bohhed down. Is that your feeling too?

As an outside a brief sentance saying "as with 40k you choose the best save available, you do not stack cover + armour"..I read your document in a very similar vein as 40k advanced and I spent ages figuring that out :D

I think poisoned weapons and CC (all tables and formula INGAME) need to be added/copied to the appendix in the back (as well) for quick search.

As I wrote in the first thread my lot would despise me trying to introduce this.. but I think it has potential..(not for a quick one off.. I think it would take 2 games before it all became second nature and started flowing properly) but certainly some awesome potential.

Maybe this is the kind of thing spack should offer to host for you..(whilst it remaining your property etc) as part of the sites ongoing awesome bits and bobs.
Barely even lurking..

Thanks a lot for the replies !

Yes, as killmaimburn said, to get used to it you must start with little armies, but once you are, you can play standard games as well. You might want to start with only infantry, and then adding vehicles, and so on.

The key thing is preparing data as much as possible before the game (for example, you can write for your units the amount of shooting damage they deal with their main weapon, it speeds up things a lot). Maybe I should add some more advice for that in the pdf file, at the 'Preparing for a diceless 40k game' page (page 11).

In a 40k game the same basic mechanics are repeated over and over (movement, shooting, assault), and then there is a bunch of special rules. So when you are used to those basics, you can play larger games.

Yes,the pdf file still needs a lot of work, and I will definitely add all the tables in the appendix.

Of course, no problem. I'll wait for spack's signal then :)
And If someone has ideas on the whole thing, I'll be happy to add them, with all due credit of course. Again, thanks for the replies !

I'll have to take a proper read through and then maybe suggest to Wolflord Havoc that we try a game or two.

I need to take an in depth look at this too.
This could go a long way towards something I've had rolling around in my head for awhile, 4oK by (e)mail.
First problem I couldn't get around was the dice rolling aspect. This removes that particular problem.
Hmmm.
