Zombie appreciation society!!!!

Postby ruffian4 » Mon Sep 15, 2008 8:31 pm

Ok, so with the near completion of the genestealer cult, the eye moves on and frodo becomes....a zombie???

Next project at TWAT mansions, is the plague cult, an apocalyptic mish mash of guard sisters repentia and grey knights (or are they...well, no not really).

So, thing 1 to do is 40 zombies to behead and replace with gas mask heads.
But, this got me to thinking what else could I do with them?

After a trawl of the internet for all things zombie, it occurred that a game in of themselves might be entertaining.
So, the idea is a cross between 40k kill team (or even an uber character) vs a resident evil style tabletop.

You know, move into that building and get 10 bolter rounds.
Get stopped by the electric fence and disable it by turning it off in building 4.

I have never played space hulk, but have a basic understanding of the "blip" system. Is that the way to go???
Have an "aquiring range" (it could be in night fight conditions) where you place terrain features as they become visible (game master/keeper style)?

I don't like the inquisitor system, so that's out.

That sort of thing. What do you think, any ideas???

when Kate and I played our Halloween "Trick or Treat!" Zombie game, we used a cotton wool circle and a random sight distance (think Night Fight), to show how far into the mist the stranded patrol (1 IG Infantry Squad) could see. as Terrain got in the way, the circle was ammended so that no part of it was out of LOS.

everything (other than Terrain) outside the ring was represented by a face down "Trick or Treat!" card that moved randomly (D6" scatter, IIRC) before each IG turn. only once the card moved into sight (or the squad moved close enough to put it within the circle) was it flipped over. heres what the deck contained:

Enounters - Trick or Treat:

9 x Guardsmen:
1-4 = D3 Guardsmen with Lasguns, added to a squad
5-6 = D6 Guardsmen with Lasguns, added to a squad

2 x Guardsman with Plasma Gun, added to a squad
1 x Sergeant (Laspistol, CCW), takes an Infantry Squad (inc. Remnants) from the Survivors
1 x Veteran Sergeant (Plasma Pistol, CCW), takes an Infantry Squad (inc. Remnants) from the Survivors
1 x Heavy Weapon Team (Missile Launcher, lasgun), added to a squad
1 x Junior Officer (Plasma Pistol, Power Weapon), takes a Command Squad from the survivors

2 x Ammo Dump - one unit in B2B contact gets to re-roll misses when shooting, after they have moved away, they get Sharpshooters for the rest of the game

2 x Fuel Dump - AV9, if Glanced or Penetrated, causes a D6" explosion, wounding on 4+

1 x Chimera:
Abandoned on a 5+ (1 Guardsman needed to drive/fire Storm Bolter, 1 to fire Heavy Bolter, 1 to fire Multi-laser)
Immobile on a 5+

15 x Plague Zombie mob:
1-2 = D3 Plague Zombies
3-5 = D6 Plague Zombies
6 = 2D6 Plague Zombies

5 x Events:
1-2 = "Dont Panic!" - each unit takes a Ld Test: if they fail, they cannot Move this turn
3-4 = "heeeelp!" - the next (non-Officer) IG unit encountered begins the game falling back (towards the nearest IG unit). they rally once they join the Survivors
5-6 = "Jones is acting strangly..." - randomly determine one Lasgun armed model and replace him with a Plague Zombie at the end of the IG turn.

the squad had to make it from one corner of the board to the other (before bed time), through a mist filled labyrinth of streets and alleyways.

it was a lot of fun!

hope that helps :)

That sounds like a fun Halloween game. I wonder if I could adapt it to be a multiplayer "grab the loot" type of game...

Cheers for the concept, Tim.

We now return you to your regularly scheduled thread.

I honestly think that trying to keep track of ammunition could be more hassle than it is worth. However, having to accomplish tasks in order to advance could be an interesting aspect to add to the Trick or Treat card idea. You could have the tasks required to overcome an obstacle included on the cards themselves.

I like the idea of a slow reveal, with a 3rd party controling events..(there are billions of ways he\she could do that)..but minimal rules so that he\she can keep the game running smoothly just byhimself.
I'm worried that the trek in a forced direction (due to borde constraints) might end up a bit like meatgrinder (+ fighting uphill so to speak) So the game would need some fairly neat fine tuning.
If your going for a walking I'd like some form of penalty for ebing somewhere too long (probably best represented by blip reserves per turn getting to mob up like space hulk)..and if your in a building I don't think you should get bonus for cover (when do zombies attack? When your in that rustic shack...maybe being in a building gives them+1 to strength as they use each other as battering rams to get to the meat and brains larder that your sat in front of or something)
(whats a resident evil table top? do you mean visually or did they make a game?)
Warseer has an incredible who loves zombies thread somewhere in its groups section.. have a peak I bet those fluff nuts would give you some ideas.

Cheers guys.
I have refined the concept a little, but am two-ing and fro-ing between a 40k setting and a "modern horror" one.

With the latter in mind, something like...

The survivor party is the remains of a goth metal band (delaque gangers) whose gig was overwhelmed by zombie shenanigans.

Shocked and dismayed by this turn of events bob the lead singer (main skill = sing) and vic the bass player (no skills, he's a bass player) join up with erotic stage dancer melanie melons (main skill = juggle chainsaws) and escape into the groan filled night!!!

They come across an abandoned police car and arm themselves with shotgun and pistols!!!
Off they go, running over zombies at their leisure, until...over the radio comes a dire warning...THE ENTIRE TOWN WILL BE BOMBED FLAT VERY SOON. ALL LAW ENFORCEMENT OFFICERS SHOULD LEG IT TO THE QUARANTINE ZONE!!!

But where is that? No response on the radio (no-one really knows how to use it).

They decide to head to a local mine where they hope to be sheltered from the bombing (time is of the essence).

Some characters…

Vic, melanie and bob.

Image

Geoff Goldblum, angry man on toilet and “the spork” (yes it is an ork with the face of a flower).

Image

Geoff Goldblum2, Max By graves (!!!), Dr Jelly and Geena Davis.

Image

Errol Flynn, local radio personality and Gertrude the miniature horse.

For those not understanding that is a realms of chaos champion of nurgle with a fly head, and geoff goldblum was the fly in the cronenberg remake.
Vic and bob go shooting in the stars (not very cryptic in fact I'm surprised you didn't go for ulrikk ka ka over melanie http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=7PeT0SzZvtA :) )
I couldn't get Dr jelly, (It could just be a cool name :) )
little horse is very cute-But why would goth musicians know what to do with a horse- maybe hes a servant of a the dead?
Angry man on toilet looks very suited, isn't he that guy from planet terror?

For zombie games, You could run a necromunda purge game with zombies and underhive beasties. There is the classic 'escape from the zombie lair' scenario as well.

And Geoff Goldblum was? 8O
You'll never figure out Dr Jelly (if I do, I'll tell you about it).

I think the way to go is an empty board (possibly with one illuminated building for effect).
Ask the players if they want to enter by means of the access road (have to abandon transport) or the spooky woodland path...(makes no difference, but they won't know that), then make noises like "you're in trouble now".

They can have some kind of auspex like device (think motion tracker in aliens and radio in silent hill). This thing will be damaged/unreliable, showing everything as a space hulk style "blip", even terrain.

I will figure out various obstacles and make some cards up for them.
Like...

Electric fence.
This thing buzzes and crackles with lethal ammounts of energy. Do you want to...
Climb it anyway / get Melanie to chainsaw through / improvise pole vault or pogo sticks / find and disable generator?

I like the idea of balance between having to get to the mine entrance in limited (but unknown) time, vs needing to search the table for usefull stuff.
Resident evil game in 3d I suppose.

There could be lots of weird stuff lying about, like "teddy bear with kaliedoscope eyes...will you take it?"

Ammo expenditure is ok, as I will "game master" it.
