Apoc question: Remote Drone Network, Fliers and Seeker Missi

Postby eiglepulper » Wed Feb 25, 2009 12:01 am

In a nutshell:

RDN places markerlights on any and all enemy units, including fliers, within its area of effect. If a flier is MLed and I choose to use that ML hit to launch a Seeker Missile, do I use the rules for hitting fliers on a 6, or do I use the Seeker rules for hitting on something somewhat better.

Seeker Missile is not doing the actual targeting of the flier, which requires the 6 to hit (or standard BS if AA-mounted weapon is involved). It is responding to the ML which "hit" the flier.

The RDN does not roll to hit; the MLs are simply placed so no 6 is required to ML a flier.

What's the consensus?

Thanks again for any help given.

ML only give you a "bonus" they do not count as the shooter for subsequent firing units.. IIRC

Agreed.

What we're trying to decipher here is which "to-hit" number is the correct one when concerning Seeker Missiles and Fliers. When responding to an ML, the codex says that the Seeker hits on an assumed BS of 5. When shooting at fliers normally, you require a 6. If the weapon is AA-mounted (like a Sky Ray's Networked Markerlights are) then the normal BS is used for the weapon actually firing to hit.

The question remains: is the Seeker considered as being "the weapon firing", thus hits on a 6, or is it "the weapon responding to the firing one" and thus follows the rules in the codex for hitting on BS5?

It will make a huge difference in this game one way or another, so we really want to find out the answer! GW Mail Order says to go by the Apoc rules of 6 to hit unless involving an AA-mount because fliers are so expensive points-wise that it would be unsporting to have something that could take them down so easily.

The unit that fired the seeker is the 6 to hit, however, as per the ML rules you could make that a 5 by using the ML bonus for that shot.

Have used the Drone Network and loved it. The 6 to hit is for units with marker lights etc - the RDN gets around this by hitting automatically so your Missles hit on a 2+ per the normal rules. Makes it superb against fliers and all other units who happen to be in the 24 inches. Your opponents will not like it very much but at my club they can see why it is so good so it only gets chosen now and again.
