I don't get it (Monolith, sorry!)

Postby Baragash » Wed Jan 19, 2011 2:46 pm

Yes, I did read the original debate and I didn't get it then either, finally decided it bugged me too much.

This "The monolith can fire the Particle whip even if it moves" is the most often misquoted rule regarding the Necron Codex.
Please take a moment to re-read page 21 of the Necron Codex. The 3rd sentence under Power Matrix. It says, "the Monolith may use its matrix in one of the following ways each Necron turn."
This is following the rule that says the Power Matrix, "...may be used even if the Monolith moves...".
The words are may "USE" and may be "USED" not may "FIRE"! Sorry for the shout but the difference is obvious.
One of the ways the Power Matrix may be "used" is to teleport Necrons. The other is as a weapon. And if you are going to use it as a weapon, you need to follow the applicable rules for weapons.
In other codexes there are specific rules saying that a particular model may use a particular weapon even if it moved at a particular speed.
There is no such specific rule in the Necron Codex or any specific GW FAQ that says the Monolith may fire the particle whip even if it moves at cruising speed.

As other posters have said, this topic has been done to death. Play it how you want, but please stop saying the rule says the Monolith may move and fire the particle whip. It doesn't.

1. The text itself as quoted from Codex Necrons defines firing as a weapon as using the Power Matrix. The difference is not obvious, in fact the very opposite of the shouting is true per the quote you've given.

2. So in Codices that weren't printed before the 5th Ed rulebook was released there's a specific mention of which speeds models can still fire at? Besides that not being remotely indicative, can someone explain to me how Cruising Speed is not a sub-set of movement in ways that don't break either basic rules of logical application or the English language?

(Note: TW's post chosen only because it was the last one in the topic/straw that broke the "stay away from RAW"'s back).

I dont get it either mate but thats what happens when you settle down.

As far as the necron question i'd agree with TW but thats more down to how i believe its meant to work than anything else.. I've never liked raw over rai.. The whole mawloc thing annoyed me with that

I think the whole problem stems from the fact that when fired as a weapon, the whip is of type Ordnance. That used to have a different affect on models in 3rd Ed which is what the Codex was originally written for and there was no such thing as Cruising speed.

In 5th ed the sentance has lost its orginal context. With that in mind you should use the 5th ed rules for when an Ordnance weapon can be fired or not. I think that's what TW is saying.

Spot on Matt. There have been so many debates on this subject.
I never played 3rd edition so I may be ignorant of the histrionics.
I started playing in 4th edition. In that edition, the Monolith could deep strike and fire the particle whip.
That was because they could move and still use the power matrix and there was nothing in the deep strike rules that stated at what speed vehicles were moving.
I could also deep strike my land speeder tornadoes and fire everything they had.
Now under 5th edition, vehicles that deep strike count as moving at cruising speed.
For the first time, a speed has been assigned.
Vehicles can fire a certain number of weapons dependent on the speed they move.
Deep striking vehicles count as moving at cruising speed. Makes no difference if the vehicle can actually move that speed or not, it counts as moving that fast.
The Monolith, not being a fast vehicle, cannot move at cruising speed and fire any weapon.
It can, however, move at cruising speed and use the power matrix.
So when it deep strikes, it can use the power matrix to bring in a unit of warriors or to teleport a Necron unit around the battlefield, but it can't use it to fire the particle whip because that is an ordnance weapon.
It can't fire its gauss flux arcs either.
But the argument continues to rage on.

Thanks Tim!
Now there's another argument going on about Necron Warriors and reserve.
I'll start a new post on it here after I have coffee and get the kids off to school.
Another 6" of snow greeted up this morning!
