oh 4 fuxake!

Postby ruffian4 » Tue Dec 14, 2010 11:37 am

Look at this mouldy old turd from the past ...

Q: Do units off of the table at the end of a game count as
destroyed for kill point purposes? (p91)
A: Yes.

... back to dead passengers again folks.

This has to be the winner of "The most unnecessary FAQ" award.

Don't suppose anyone can quote the rulebook for the bit that says models in transports are off the table could they? (work/no book here :()

BRB page 66 under 'Embarking', "When the unit embarks, it is removed from the table and placed aside, making a note or otherwise marking that the unit is being transported.."
Also page 79 under 'Occupying Buildings', "Models entering a building are removed from the table - you can either note down where they are on a piece of paper or use another suitable reminder."

So Ruffian's point is that, by RAW (according to the new FAQ), units in transports and buildings count as destroyed when the game ends and give up kill points!

Anyone who argues the rules mean that needs to have 200,000 volts through the privates.

Which would be different than "corporal punishment" for "general purposes", eh?

Suggested by someone else:

By the way, the Embarkin rule itsellf provides a loophole against the raw interpretation, in that, we are allowed to place a marker as a proxy for the unit, an leave that marker on the table

(we find that placing one of the unit's models on top of the transport works well!)

So essentially, while the rule details that the unit is removed from the table, I can still take a model from the unit to tether the unit to the table, by placing it on the transport itself.

I think Ruffian's point is that in the first place the rules FAQs are supposed to clarify confusing rules, not add confusion to something already clear.

In the second place, in a game situation with an opponent (like playing against HIM, you know who I mean) who tries to get kill points for your embarked units at the end of the game by citing the rules I gave you, you are properly prepared to counter the argument. For example, a unit off the table cannot target or fire at a unit on the table but embarked units can fire;

Q: Must passengers fire at the same target that their
vehicle is firing at? (p66)
A: No, they are a separate unit (albeit they are temporarily
co-existing with the vehicle) and so can fire at a different
target.

Again, it is just an illustration that some portions of the FAQ were as poorly written and thought out as the rules.

But the marker doesn't in anyway have an existence, beyond a reminder, does it?
You can't shoot at/from it.
If you leave the embarked unit in an unused part of the table, doesn't mean the unit is on the table.

Sleep well in your knowledge that you and your friends have a little common sense... and you don't play with Alan every week ;)

I seem to remember a similar situation under 3rd ed...? (or something)

Anyway, was this "clarification" even needed?
P95, Deepstrike Mishaps, "Delayed" states that the unit counts as Destroyed if it hasnt arrived before the game ends. What else actually allows a unit to be off table (and not just "inside a transport so physically placed on a side table, while existing ingame" etc)?

(and even if there is something that allows this, it would have been better to FAQ whatever rule that is to explain that absent units count as Destroyed, rather than add a general rule)
