So what does happen to passengers then?

Postby mattjgilbert » Mon Dec 15, 2008 10:21 am

BDA played a tournament on Sunday and said this about one game
BDA wrote:LOL HE WAS NOT HAPPY WHEN I SURROUNDED HIS RHINO WITH THE CHAPLIN IN IT AND BLEW IT UP KILLING EVERY ONE INSIDE WITH OUT ANY SAVES =D JUST WISH I DID IT TO THE ONE WITH THE COMMAND SQUAD AND HIS BIG NASTY IN IT INSTEAD LOL

Which got me thinking about how you would do this so I looked at the rules again. As far as I can tell:

1. If passengers cannot disembark normally (from exit points) due to enemy proximity or impassable terrain, you can make an emergency disembarkation. If even this is impossible, the unit cannot disembark.
2. If the damage result is a 5, the vehicle is wrecked and the passengers must disembark - follow the rules above. If the emergency disembarkation is not possible, the passengers are all killed.
3. If the damage result is a 6, the passengers DO NOT disembark but are simply placed where the vehicle was.

So I think:
1. The only situation in which you can kill all the passengers is to ensure they cannot perform any kind of disembarkation and also roll a 5 on the damage table. Rolling a 6 (a worse result in theory) will not do it.
2. On a result of 6, there is no restriction on placing models within 1" of enemy models. But if there is or you simply didn't have enough room to fit them all in (physically because of the presence of enemy models) what happens?

Thoughts?

EDIT - also note that a unit which shot and destroyed the vehicle "may assault the now disembarked passengers" - but on the result of a 6... they didn't disembark!

P67 Wrecked "Any models that cannot disembark are destroyed".. remember that can happen if you immobilise weapon strip and bounce up all the damage table as well.. I've seen it happen 3 times now (which is why I was going on about it so much 6 weeks or so back..
As to question 2
Its tricky, we all know that some vehicles are smaller than their potential carrying quota and we say this is an abstract.. but then when you phsically have to place the bases on to the tardis like vehicle its a painfull reminder of why some editions transports are better than others.
Mesyy one.. But 1 I say yes (with my correction put in), (and then there is the messy thing about whether you can partially disembark.. Ljundhammer found a bit about where if he can only fit his HQ out it would have still have been destroyed, 2 Yeah go for it.. but whilst using the penalising rule I'd suggest a broad gift of distance is given (so its not to iffy)

Destroyed vs Exploded sometimes makes me cry.
But, the way you described it seems to be the way it works.

Exit the vehicle (if you can) staying 1" away from the enemy. If not, then sorry Bud, we'll try to recover your body from the mangled ruins later.

I've got to say I'm now glad I scratch built my wave serpents a few years ago, because of the cobbled together fins making the footprint bigger than the current model. It makes the vehicle larger & easier to hit, but it gives me more room to place the remaining members of the squad when the thing explodes.
The rule of 40k is "most special rules winzzors (unless your grey knights)" so sayeth me.

didnt we do this thread already, here? :?

IIRC, nothing actually says you lose models within 1" of the enemy when placing them in the wreckage (after an Explodes result), but it is probably GaP/considered RaI. it would at the very least be incredibly difficult to argue over losing models that cannot be placed because there simply isnt room to put them down due to the enemies that were surrounding their transport.

as to Emergency Disembarkation, i would say that the whole unit is only (supposed to be) destroyed if they all cannot disembark (inc. Emergency Disembarkation) - otherwise, only the models that cannot disembark legally are destroyed. there might be a RaW arguement to the contrary (i made one in the other thread :P), but it is pushing context a bit...

something else to note is that the defined sequence of events in the 5th ed rules means that there is no longer any sort of arguement over whether you can disembark onto a Wreck (you definately get out first and then it becomes a Wreck, by which point its too late for you to deploy on it).

hope that helps :)
