A little challenge.

Postby Dav0r » Mon Mar 29, 2010 8:45 pm

Consider the attached picture, where I have the blue (Ultramarines) and my opponent have the Dark angels (actually he had white scars but in the software for the battle reports there isn't any white scars but hey :p).

And yes, it was last night's game :)

In this game, which was capture and control, the objective you see on the map was needed for me to have a draw (he had the other one, with no possibility for me to take it). I lost the game at turn 7. I played second.

So at my turn 7, my sternguard and my assault marines were fighting his terminators, to prevent them from contesting the objective. It was a sort of desperate effort since he had Hit & Run with the terminators. So at the end of my turn he just attempted it and it passed. Damn it ! :) He passed his init test and he rolled enough distance with 3d6 to contest the objective. So he did.

A few minutes after that, I slapped myself. At my turn I could have held the objective for certain, and with a simple manoever.

Here is the little challenge : can you find how you can play the ultramarines and hold the objective ?
- the terminators have hit & run
- the sternguard and the assault marines are already locked with the terminators, but we'll suppose that enough termies will survive.
- the three marines are holding the objective as per the mission rules (3" from it)
- the rhino is immobilized
- the LRC is fully operational and contains two marines (don't ask :P), one with a power glove and another with a bolter.

I don't have any idea whether you will find that easy or hard, but here it is :)

Move the 3 Marines so they block the Termies move by standing them 3"+ the width of their base from the objective and 2" apart?

I was thinking consolidate your assualt marines back to form a wall between the drop pods (fail combat can't be chased by termies and can opt to fail any tests)..
But I think baragash's version is more reliable.

The assault marines cannot consolidate unless they have Hit & Run themselves.

I'll go with bara's repositioning of the 3 marines plus moving the land raider up 12" and unloading the 2 marines + a run to also help block the way.

We have a winner ! \o/

Why didn't I think of it ? Yes the 3 marines must block the termies since the termies can only move in a straight line.
I guess I was too focused on the close combat ... ah well :)

Nice! Unfortunately I saw this a little too late to jump in.
This would be a nice weekly feature for the site DavOr (hint hint!) if you would be interested in putting it together!
It could come from a regular game, or could be something made up.
What do you think?

Sorry I wrote my sentance backwards..I can see why you picked up on that but I did cover it.
Multiple combat. You lose, 1 of your units deliberately uses combat tactics to breakaway. You cannot be swept (due to multiple and ATSKNF) and your opponent cannot move up the Dx to make sure you carry on running.
As I say that version is possible.. just less good. (as you need to fail a bunch of stuff but still be effective speedbumps in 2 places)

Well if you did that here, the answer would be the same.
If it was done on some of the other sites, the question might be the same, but you would get a different answer each week!

They would have to be joined by Kor'sarro Khan.

Or you could ask different questions and get the same answer.
I wonder how many questions could be answered by "no, read the rulebook?"

Probably like 98%?! 8)
But questions about tactica are a different matter. For them, there may be many correct answers, but very few 'right' ones!
