Daemon chariots anyone?

Postby mattjgilbert » Sun Jan 17, 2010 10:08 pm

I'd not really paid any attention to them before as there were no real models (short of converting some) but taking a recent look at daemon chariots (for the herlads) and they seem insanely good for the points. Almost too good to be true.

Has anyone used them and if so, how did they perform? I'm seriously planning chariots now for all the heralds (probably two of each) as chariots are not something to dismiss lightly in WHFB either but in 40K they seem an absolute bargain for the points vs the stat buff they provide.

Here's the slaanesh one

Lose:
IC status (boohoo)

Gain:
+2 A
+1 T
+3 W
get a 4+ armour save
get furious charge

For 15 points! Plus then add might, and other bits to total about 100 points for the unit

And you can have 4 per army...

Crazy good.

Yes they are.. we have said it before.. most recently here..But all over the place really.
I believe Murphey in a previous thread in the dusts of time was just saying a bucket of khorne ones would be better than same points bloodthirster (although i may be imagining he said that.. I said it at some point)

I suppose a downside is that it makes you a bigger target. I assume a bigger base is in order too. Might that make deep striking a little bit riskier? Still for 15pts it seems a good bargain. Does it increase the models movement at all?

A lot of people consider 4xHoT in Chariots to be a competitive build from reading around the interwebs.

I've used Herald of Tzeentch on Chariots before because their mobility compliments their shooting powers very well.
The ability to break open a transport with Bolt of Change then evaporate what was inside either with Breath of Chaos or just Gaze works well. Because of their speed they can get into the back arc of vehicles, and the 5 wounds (whats up with them having more wounds than a GD anyway?) means that they can usually survive at least oneround of shooting to do so, especially with being able to TurboBoost, gain the enhanced save and reposition for another shot.

Slannesh Heralds really suffer with their low Strength and Toughness. They can add some punch to a unit of Daemonettes if on foot but on a chariot they cannot do the damage of even a cheap DP even with the bonuses.
Naked on the charge you get 7 attacks S4 Rending for 65 pts, followed by 6 attacks S3 rending
2 Fiends (60 pts) gives you 12 attacks S5 rending, then 10 attacks S5 Rending.
The Herald may hit more often but the fiends will do more damage.

It can do. Chariot of Slaanesh makes you Cavalry, CoT makes you jump infantry.

On the fiends are better thing.. the chariot would last longer in a combat I think (5 wounds and an armour save) so would do more damage overall (not done the maths)?

I had a quick play in army builder last night and for 1500 points got (for a pure slaanesh force):

4 x helards of slaanesh on chariots with daemonic gaze, might (+ another.. can't remember)
3 x 6 fiends + might
3 x 12 daemonettes
1494 I think it came to.

That's a hell of a lot of rending attacks + some shooty AP3 weaponry and a fast moving force to boot.

When the demon codex first came out I made something like that, filling HQ, elites and FA with as much slanneshy rending as possible, 5th ed hit the rending on the head and smacked the killpoints down and made the troops more necessary .Which is fortunate really because as it stood it really wasn't winning any fwends :D
Now its not really all that hot.. (apart from the fiends of course)

While I dislike proxying, I might give it a go to try out the list for a laugh.
