First draft of GT Final SW list.

Postby Confused_gordy » Thu Dec 10, 2009 3:03 pm

So made it to the final, with a list using logan, and a few squads of wolf guard with cyclones, some long fangs, a rune priest, a drop podded grey hunter force and a land raider. It did pretty well on Saturday, getting me onto table 4, and got a large 7000 ish vps over the weekend.

Some observances of the weekend were that the rune priest although handy wasn't really that necessary or potent (so he got dropped). The land raider redeemer was amazing, surviving 4 out of 6 games, and messing up almost everything it came into contact with. Logan really is the king, and his squad boosting abilities were incredible with the long fangs (however I felt his prestigious combat abilities were wasted in this role.) the wolf guard proved to be fairly durable and effective, however I felt they weren't quite as combat effective as I would like.

New thoughts are, that with the lack of horde I faced, and saw in general, I feel that a more powerful compact force is in order. So I dropped the grey hunters, and the rune priest. And took more wolf guard.

I found the drop pod unit effective but wanted a more durable first turn punch with them, and so came wolf guard, and arjac. I decided to take him and a storm shield in order to give the drop squad some survivability, and a couple of combi meltas for a hopeful first turn tank pop. I hope this unit will be a major threat in any HQ mission, and a decent objective taker in objective missions.

Enjoying the longfangs effectiveness with logan but feeling pinned to my own deployment zone I felt a change was in order, so a huge terminator unit struck me as a handy idea with two cyclones and tank hunters, an effective 4 lascannon shots each turn, walking towards my enemy, will be quite handy. The storm shield will take special weapons fire until it fails, and the chain fist is there incase I run into any other big nasties.

Finally the last wolf guard unit is in the army, and rides into battle within the land raider, as a dedicated combat unit, unfortunately I didn't find enough points to kit these guys out as well as I would like, but a chain fist and a wolf claw, makes them adequate combatants, and a storm shield will help against power fist units.

HQ
Logan = 275
TROOPS
Wolf guard – 10 in TDA – 2 cyclone missiles, chain fist, storm shield = 390
Wolf guard – 5, 4 in TDA – arjac, 2 combi meltas, storm shield, wolf claw = 350
Drop Pod = 35
Wolf guard – 5 in TDA – chain fist, storm shield, wolf claw = 185
HEAVY SUPPORT
Land raider redeemer - Extra armour, Multi Melta = 265

Thoughts welcome

You obviously roll 2+ better than me then :(. I took DeathWing with 3 squads, 2 LRCs, Belail & a chaplain.

Tabled twice, lost 7 land raiders in total. I'd definately advocate Chainfists, they are multi-shot melta guns for terminators. However, the prevalence of melta was what did me (that and failing a lot of 2+ saves!)

After reading the second space wolf omnibus, I'm full of wolfish conviction. And although I liked the last Force I posted, I feel This next one, might be a little more fun and fluffy.

HQ
Logan = 275 (with GHs in Land Raider)
Wolf Guard Battle Leader – TDA – wolf claw, storm shield = 140 (With Wolf guard in drop pod)
TROOPS
Wolf Guard – 5 – TDA:
Cyclone missile launcher, storm bolter, power weapon (with plasma GHs)
Power Fist, combi melta (With Drop Pod GHs)
wolf claw, storm bolter
Power weapon, combi melta
Chain Fist, storm bolter
= 235
Drop Pod = 35
Grey Hunters – 8 – melta gun, wolf standard = 135
Drop Pod = 35
Grey Hunters – 10 – 1 flamer, 1 plasma gun = 150
Grey Hunters – 10 – 2 melta guns, wolf standard = 135 (in land raider, with logan)
ELITES
Lone Wolf – terminator armour, storm shield, Thunder Hammer = 95
FAST ATTACK
HEAVY SUPPORT
Land raider redeemer – extra armour, multi melta = 265

I don't feel Its quite as effective as the last list, as It lacks Long range fire power, however it does contain a lot more close range anti tank death, and is a much larger force in general, however what I feel it does have is a greater strength of character and believability that it is a great company and not just a massive collection of wolf guard.

The battle leader is there because I wanted one of my wolf guard to stand out as the company champion.
The lone wolf, because after the last book in the omnibus, a warrior reclaiming his honour is just fantastic stuff.
I wanted to fit in a couple of fenrisian wolves to go with my lone wolf for effect, but i cant get the points together.

Think it will get tabled? Or does it still stand a chance?

Hunter squad is underpointed and should be 165PTS.

Give your wolf a chain fist instead of the hammer, and his 5 pts over, should be 85pts with the chain fist.

I personnaly dont like the list. Its nice and fluffy but not hard enough! If you want an aggressive list, try 2 raiders with logan with 5 termies in a redeemer, and 4 termies and a wolf priest in another, drop poding hunters, razorback hunters to hold base, and long fangs!
