Grey knight list:

Postby KInG » Sat Aug 31, 2013 12:30 pm

I'm trying to develop a 1850 grey knight list. To be honest I'm looking at my models and finding it hard to get enthused about them.

What units are an auto pick (apart from the dreadies with tl s8 auto cannons of which I usually field two). Or what units do you not like to face and why?

Let's see if I can't get my juices flowing again for these fellas.

I'm playing my grey knights at the moment. I'll be honest, my list looks nothing like the internet tournie lists. Good job too as those spam lists are very boring and tedious. I'm sure purifiers will still feature, storm ravens or landraiders full of terminators and dreadknights.
I've not actually faced the current grey knights myself yet.

The only lists I like the look of dont have many GKs in them.

Coteaz
Min henchmen squads + IG platoon; or henchmen to taste (maybe a couple of rhinos for the next part of the army to hide behind)
Gk jumpers
Jumping dreadknights

At 1850 you should be able to get 20-25 jump troops with 3 jumping incinerator dreads and a load of scoring to back it up.

Throw jumping stuff down opponents throat & avoid flyers by being in combat. The masses of cheap infantry squads do their best not to die.

I have Cortez in my list usually, with three plasma cannon toting servitors for any deep striking nastiness. I've also realised that sticking him on a quad gun can be even better.

I like the idea of other henchmen units also with varying capabilities. Some combat orientated and others more shooty. I can use my ig for alot of the stuff, and I have a few bits. But to do a henchmen heavy list would be expensive as most models are direct only, eg the crusader model with the storm shield.

I have two dread knits and a unit of 10 jump dudes. I think I'll try them. Just wondering how they would do vs that tau list I fced though of darklighters the other night. They would have a field day shooting these fellas to bits before they could even strike or return fire. :(

Most henchmen are rubbish. Only stormbolters plasma or meltas are worth it. They are straight IG conversions. Sometimes they're only taken for the S7 assault-back.

They go through a breakdown of GK in 6th here http://www.3plusplus.net/2013/05/greyknightsreview1/
and in subsequent articles..
http://www.3plusplus.net/2013/05/grey-k ... s-unlocks/
http://www.3plusplus.net/2013/05/grey-k ... -henchmen/
http://www.3plusplus.net/2013/06/grey-k ... haracters/
TL:DR
6th ed on the surface hasn't been kind (e.g. those weakass pillbox guard mech spam everyone ran as default tactic in 5th are bogged down and being immune to suppression fire in a tank isn't what it used to be (woo 6th ed has forced a slight change in playstyle).. force swords don't rape face.. (who sent terminators against terminators anyway) and they don't get the silly awesome battle brothers with everyone else that astrates get..(but they can sit alongside them as seperates)

But they default have access to divination, purifiers are still the sexy, you must remember their bortherhood mastery for deny the witch (1/3rd ignore whilst everyone else just has to suck it up and get raped by the flying circus) and before that especially with a psfleman advanding in your ranks any lev10 sorceror targeting your guys counts as being leadership6 for trying to get them in the first place.. (its the new/ old runes of warding)..
Take their good stuff, grenades cheap hq and termies (I think I was the only person this time last year field testing them as the only allies permissible already writing off DA termies as potential future allies), or unlock expensive hqs and better troops.. and take something that fills the holes (in my mind some kind of alpha strike DA cheap 5 man scoring missiles etc vindicators and some infravisors to get some first shots offa quadlauncher)
Guard players have upped and quit due to falling off the top slot..so the number of 1000:1 model counts you'll face are much less which is your big downside.

Re taking a jumping monstrous creature horde with more jumping troops.. of course you'll get shot to crap.. thats the point of an assault army.. you lose 1/2th your army getting there..Then the other half win you the battle
either;
a) suck it up
b) take a hybrid force where you shoot back (you faced my bloodhammer with its zillion missiles as well as assault swarm?)
c) don't try to do assault (I have one friend who still insists any assualt phase, any movement anything.. beyond trench warfare shooting phase is beardy.. he plays the wrong sort of games  )

The terminator based army (or lots of terminators and grey knights) with psybolt and psycannons. This core is solid and can dish out a lot of punnishment for most infantry. With cheap, but effective HQ or Librarian, these could then be supported. Might of Titans and a ten man terminator squad with brother hood banner is a combination I like because the halberds can hurt waithlords and one 6 is all thats required to kill a waithlord.
And the purifiers in transport, these would not be shot at and could take down hordes should they get charged by an orc horde. With some tactics and using those as the back bone of the force, is something thats quite resilient and even hordes would struggle.
Something like stormraven or some the heavy support or anything would from the Grey knights would complement the force.

And Grey knights have easy access to weapons that makes then utterly lethal should the army find itself opposed to lots of psykers or Grey Knights.

Psflemen dreads come with reinforced/super aegis (you know just because they didn't do enough already compared to smurf brethren.. but it does make them a valid alt to flying breadknifes)
