Killing Tyranids

I've not had the opportunity to the play against the new nids. This concerns be as I am playing at the GT this weekend. So, we've heard all the good things about them... now I would like to read about their weaknesses ;)

Is it true they can all me insti killed now, but are all T6 anyways, making them none insti killable?

And what are the units to wath out for, what are the nasty little tricks I expect to see?

yes they can be instant killed. Most of the MC's are a high toughness, but wade in with force weapons etc.
The two widespread tricks I've seen peeps talk about are 3 zoanthropes in a pod for anti tank and tervigon spam. If people are smart, they won't have the tervigon spawn more termagants until later in the game to claim objectives.
There are quite a few interesting army themes about and I expect people to still be experimenting, so you will have gaunt hordes, drop troop spam, MC spam or a genestealer rush.
I do expect plenty of people to use outflank, deepstrike and drop pods. Tyranids will have trouble keeping foot sloggers alive long enough in competitive games.

Wathc out for mawlocs, assuming you're taking the IG. The intention to the rules on how it appears (based upon them being played by the codex writer in a bat rep, or so I've heard) is that the mawloc can attempt to emerge under units - S6 against a tanks rear armour is not something to be sniffed at, unless you're in a Land Raider.

Also, they have a distinct lack of frag grenades.

You should probably read up on the Doom of Malan'Tai and spirit leach.
Being familiar with the arguments will mean you have a stronger standing against any arse who tries it against you when you call the judge over.

Stupidest case scenario
At the start of every shooting phase (including your own) any infantry within 6"s (*argued including those inside transports* as not "psychic" or "shooting"*) takes a leadership test on 3d6,for each point over you lose a mini (no armour or cover apply) and he gains a wound and str up to 10 (which he can choose to use to create a psychic shooting attack equal in str to the number of dead ap1 large blast.(not ordinance).
They haven't faqed it yet (although they may believe they have by reiterating the bit about eldar falcons last month).so at the moment it still stands as silly.
Its almost as broken as those psychic orders guard have that can't be blocked.. not quite as rude, less likely to be still around in a fortnight :lol:

I’ve an Idea K!ng why don’t you buy me a competitive Tyranid Army and we'll have a game on Wednesday. You can then paint and base it for me when you come back with the first place trophy :lol: :wink:

Agree - this is the biggest bone of contention at the moment; If you read as RAW, it can be very nasty.

Last night, Sam asked for a Tournament practice game of my Tyranids vs his Blood Angels (PDF Codex); the Doom was in a Mycetic Spore and dropped in 6" from 2 units (5 Assault Marines and 10 Tactical Marines in Rhino), the leech failed to hurt the Assault Marines he threw 8 for Ld, but the Tactical lost 5 models as he threw 14 on the dice.
We then had a debate about all the things stated in the other threads.
Can it affect units in vehicles as they are not on the table? My Answer: Yes
Do they get a Cover Save from being within the vehicle? My Answer: No
Does the Unit take a Break Test for 25% casualties? My Answer: No

In the following Blood Angel turn, the Assault Marines shot and CC the Doom doing 1 wound damage (3+ Invul Saves made). Next Tyranid Shooting Phase - the Leech then kills 4 Assault Marines and the final one in combat.
Then went into combat against the Tactical Squad - at which point I forgot to use the Leech ability till Turn 7 to wipe them out (Tyranid Players needs to remember that Leech must go off at the start of the Shooting Phase - I got so excited about using the Trygons that I forgot).

So if I was going to the Tournament with Tyranids, top things that I would take:
[*]Doom in a Mycetic Spore
[*]Trygon or two (maybe up 1 to Prime)
[*]A pair of Zoanthropes in Mycetic Spore
[*]Tervigon to spawn those objective grabbers
[*]And if points available Swarmlord with 2 Tyrant Guard

Units I don't expect to see:
[*]Gargolyes - take up too much space
[*]Carnifexes - with Armour 3+ and less wounds than a Trygon, why bother
[*]Genestealer rush - anything less than a 16 strong Brood will win 1 fight and then die to shooting or counter attack
[*]Tyranid Warriors - unless you are going with lots and lots, they die too easily to Str8+ instant kill
[*]Winged Tyrant - too expensive for what it can kill

Spores are like drop pods so any unit which takes one will be DSing in.

Thing is it's also a drop pod that's a credible threat to transport vehicles. 6 S6 shots (ok at 5+ to hit and AP-)can be worrying to exposed rear armor. Especially tasty as it can fire the turn it drops in, unlike a DSing vehicle.

Unless it's a meteorite falling to Earth, which will destroy all life, then you're pretty much hosed no matter what you wish for.
Unless it's death by meteorite.

lmao, guys you are all scaring me. All i read is they can do this and that, and no one telling me they can't do this or that... or more to the point.

Focus on what's important.
Eat a unit at a time in the correct order. The trygons ect may have 6 wounds at T6 and regenerate, but if you kill them then they can't use it. Make sure you put a target down don't leave it half-assed.
If your threat assessment skills are up to par then choose a target, position yourself to minimise ranged casulties (not hard as they are limited in shooting) and hit them until they fall.
Guard do have some of the best tools (first rank second rank for swarms, Bring it down for monsters) use them wisely.
Apart from the Zoanthropes they cannot take tanks at range with any consistancy, keep just that little ahead and keep hammering.
They do well against armies tooled to kill marines because people don't have the fire saturation to kill them.

Know your self and your enemy and remain undefeated for a thousand battles, Know only yourself and for every victory shall come defeat, Know neither your self or your enemy and be driven from the field each time you do battle.

Get the codex and read. It's amazing how well you can play if you know exactly what each enemy unit is capable of.
