Land Raider Sponson placement

Postby Socaddict » Thu Sep 10, 2009 6:11 pm

Where do people place their land raider sponsons, front or back? At the front obviously maximises the range of the weapons, especially on the redeemer variant, while placing them at the rear is probably best if its main role is as an assault transport.

So, if I'm running a redeemer as an assault transport, which placement should I use, and similarly for a crusader.

The difference between placing the flamestorm in the rear or front location is 1 1/2". Even if you placed it in the front, you wtill can deploy any 6 termies or 12 models in coherency. The deployment zones from the front ramp and the rear sponson positions do overlap ever so slightly.
For an assault transport, I don't think it will make too much difference as far as getting troops into assault. You are still going to assault with the closest model, which will probably deploy out of the front ramp, and follow up with the rest of the squad.
Using the flamestorm template on the other hand, 1 1/2" can be a big difference! You would lose that distance on the template for placing the flamestorm further back on the model. Plus, with POTMS, you can use the other sponson to thin down another group of enemies.
Mine are magnetized, along with the hatches, so I can change them if I find one configuration works better than another, but so far, havingthe weapons mounted in the front bay has proven to be the better option.
It should work out about the same for any of the land raider variants.

I don't understand why anyone would put the guns at the back. The terminators jump out the doors in a suitably cool and scary manner, only for a couple to be shot in the back of the head by a lascannon.

The front is cooler, fluffier, and better for range. Always on the front!

I find it looks better at the back, at the front it all seems a bit forward heavy. But I agree, putting them at the back is silly due to the way range and LOS is measured. I just need to figure out how to remove the ones on one of my LRs that are at the back (I got it off eBay cheap, my own builds have them at the front!).

I agree, it LOOKS better at the back - but it makes more sense at the front! I actually prefer the Forge World Variant (which was based on the Epic model, or 'Pre-heresy') - It covers both front & back, but the weapons are mounted at the front. Shame its £56...

This had got to be my fave LR version.

OT.
I've always thought it was daft having the exit hatches in front of the guns.
I'm beginning to put the sponson's forward on my newer kits.

AdrianG: Yes thats the one! I really do think they look ace. I'm considering scratch building the pieces for a Land Raider I have currently lying around, & getting the Crusader/Redeemer so I can change weapons etc.... :D

Another reason to have the exits behind the guns is p67
"or even disembarking at the same time using different access points (but they must end their move more than 2" away from each other)."
If you have a big squad and IC splitting, the (EXTRA)seperation is handy pre move to keep the distance when flooding out of all exits

Another plus for having the guns at the front is that the enemy will find it harder to block all access points and force an emergency disembark.

And yes having an IC get out a long way away from a squad can sometimes be very helpful for multiple charges and generally increasing a LRs' effective range.
