What are some common/effective set ups for Troop choices in Space Marine lists (that doesn't involve grav weapons)?

Scouts. Snipers are always good, but I use shotguns. Lots of outflanking shots make for some nice linebreaking rear objective cleaners/grabbers. Being a BA player I also love my assault troops I genrally run 10 man squads with melta, flamer and infernus pistol. this allows me to deep strike the squad and split them up the flamer and 4 bolters go crowd hunting while the to melta weapons drop in on (rear if possible) armour to thin out the heavy metal. I only ever run my Tacticals as objective campers I don'tthink they are a poor option they just don't fit my army build very well ATM. For a marine 'dex list I'd definatly tool up with a skyfire missile for that 10 point upgrade.

i play orks, so all the marines i face now take plasma cannons, last two games have seen four 5 man sqauds with plasma, devs with plasma, lots of templates to squash the boyz, vidicators are good agsainst me if they can survive, but my real achilles heel is land raiders. if they stay away from my powa klaws i just cant seem to kill them

Tacticals:
10 man, plasma, combi-plasma, multi-melta (24" kill range)
Add rhino/razorback if you have other armour for saturation

Scouts:
Snipers - add a ML for shooting at flyers
Don't bother though, IG are cheaper & affect a similar job

Bikes:
5 strong, double plasma/melta, combi-same, multi melta


Allies:
Imperial guard platoon for objective camping

MOAR Space marines

Firewarriors/eldar/whatever - keep cheap, you don't want their troops

=][= - I don't need no stinking troops


The troops need to "fit in" with your other elements. Having tacticals on foot in an armour heavy list is asking for trouble for example.

I have to say most tac squads ive faced just get blitzed through sheer weight of fire or the survivors getting mullered in CC it seems that most people take them as obj campers but never really try anything special with them unless the game asks it (relic for example) but it seems from my point of you that if you take out the main focus of a marine army their whole battle plan falters
Case in point...monday just gone 4 way battle with Chaos marines, Chaos Cultists, Tyranids and Loyal Marines
it started with each army basically sizing each other up the Loyalist marines had a plasma dev squad camped up high with an eternal shield captain (the shield of the noobs as i call it) advancing with a squad of smurfs to protect him
As soon as the building his Dev squad was in crumbled to the ground and his Devs got Assaulted by Stealers nothing went right for him

hahaha and my cultists army took everything but one model of the tyranids whilst the traitor chaos shot me with a havoc launcher hahahah
