AI is here!

Aerial combat in the 41st millennium

Postby jlong05 » Tue Jan 09, 2007 2:26 pm

I agree. The game looks cool and the figures look great. But alas I am in the same hole taht spacedwarv is. I am in the states and stuff from Forge World shipped to the US is just way too much. The book comes in at about $60 US then shipping adds another $15 - $20. So like $100 just for the rules. I like my marriage so I will have to pass fo rnow.. Too bad cause the timing for this game is great as I just recently finished the Abnet book 'Double Eagle'. Which really got me thinking on air combat in 40k. Oh well.

You should have ordered last week - if you'd bought the rules and a bunch of aircraft to total £100 or more, shipping was free. You could have got together with some other gamers and placed a single order.

The 40k Necron range has only the Pylon. I guess none of the FW designers have put forwards ideas for Necron flyers yet. Someone over on Warseer has designed his own (and Thunderbolts too):

I can't see FW leaving it too long before they do some Necron flyers, and I guess the Pylon will be their ground defence. My brother-in-law will likely convert his own Necron flyers based on the BFG ships.

I just hope it doesn't end up getting £15 updates every 6 months, and that the new stats are released in PDF form on the FW site as new aircraft are released.

Oh, I just ordered 2 Tiger Sharks and 4 Barracudas - decided I might as well try Tau as I've avoided them in 40k. Once the Eldar Phoenix and Vampire are out I'll have 3 playable squadrons, so at least when friends come around who haven't bought any yet I can still get some games in :)

I agree. Those conversions did look great.. I only hope that the great and powerful GW sees this for what it is and decides to take it to all locations and make it available and plastics available in all their locations.. I know.. wishful thinking, but heres to hoping!

Very wishful thinking - if they did take it on then it'd likely be Specialist Games with the existing metal Epic figure support, and so it'd still be better to get resin aircraft from FW as the GW aircraft are really small.

Actually, you can play this game with the GW aircraft (or even go to a toy shop and buy various small aircraft or space ships, about 2 inches long for the fighters is just right), use hex bases, and use dice to mark each one with the speed and altitude (use D10s as the dials go from 0 to 9) rather than get the FW bases. Then all you need are the rules, and while I wouldn't normally suggest looking on P2P I'd guess that it won't take long for them to pop up on there.

I guess wit hthe rules and just the bases its not so bad. I checked and the rules are about $65 US. The special bases are probably close to $5 a pack of 5. Then you have shipping. If as you said you go in with friends its probably a lot better as you can split those shipping costs. I only wish FW would get more locations such as stateside. Similar to GW stores. That way everything would be more available and not such a pain to get. Oh well. I really like the figures, and will probably buy some in the distant future(maybe off of ebay as early adopters decide they didn't want to continue to play it)

I am glad you said something about the epic flyers being smaller though. I was very tempted to try to snag some of them off ebay but if they are not the right scale it would just annoy me.

From what I've heard the GW metal flyers are about 1 inch long, so they're about half the size of the FW aircraft. I did have some really old original GW Thunderbolts and they were tiny!

a friend of mine had some gw ones as well and they dont really look quite right up against the fw ones, but then I guess its up to personal taste.

They've probably done it to make sure that people dont start using the epic stuff, which I think is cheaper

Nah, the FW flyers have been around for ages. GW designed the originals, but when FW did the 40k ones they made them bigger - the 40k scale GW vehicles have always been a bit too small (try squeezing 10 marines into the back of Rhino with leg room :P). When FW made their epic versions they kept them to scale with the 40k models, and so they ended up bigger than the the GW models.

If I was on a budget and I liked the GW models, I'd use them. As it is I don't like them, and I'd rather get the FW models - they're actually not that expensive, for most of the standard scenarioes 4 fighters is plenty and that's about £24; less than the cost of a single 40k Leman Russ!

Yeah, it's huge. I very nearly ordered one, but I'll leave it for now. Have you seen it's stats? With 14 hits it's going to be a tough cookie to break, and it can hover making it a bit more useful at dropping jump troops on objectives rather than having to land or risk overshooting the mark.

Yeah it is has fantastic stats, especially since it has 14 hit points, (also does everyone hit on a 5+??? if so then) you would need 42 shots to cause enough hits and that isnt even taking into account having to cause the damage. Which makes it absolutely nails especially since the equivalent points of chaos would give about 8 fighters all with only 4 ammo giving only 32 shots, meaning it impossible to take out, granted you'd take the bombers as well but still I think you get my point
