I'd recommend Thunderbolts for their firepower and resilience, Lightnings for their Very High turning and good firepower, and maybe a Marauder in case you play any games requiring bombing runs. How many points are you looking at? For a basic 80pt game I tend to take 2 Lightnings and 2 Thunderbolts.

Never played and never seen it played either!
Any chance of a bat rep or something to see how it goes?

I played my first game about 3 weeks ago. I had intended to post a batrep bit couldn't find a good piece of software to give the visuals. I know the guy and I had a good time. We basically did a 2on 2 fight. He had 2 tbolts and I had a tau cuda and tiger.

I will try again once I get back from vacation to see if I can find software.

A few of us here on AoS use Battle Chronicler. Very highly recommended!

Yes I think BC would work fine. You could add little Altitude (and even damage labels) to each aircraft.

This is relevant to my interests...

I saw Spack & Stunty playing on Saturday. This game looks awesome!

What's the best starting value (looks to be 80-100 points)? I'm going Imperial Navy, but the wife wants an airforce too. Looks like it'll be either Tau or Eldar. Are all the armies balanced, or are there ones with a definate advantage or disadvantage over the others (I don't want her to have a pants force)

Cheers guys.

Eldar certainly have the best ships so she will not have a pants force!

I think most of the forces are pretty good and balanced. Eldar definitely have the best ships, but the rest really aren't 'that' bad. I like my Tau force. 4 'Cudas, 2 Tigers and 4 Remoras. I have to sub my standard Tigers as AX-2-2 variants, but I plan to pick up a pack of the actual model soon. I actually picked up the Remoras without looking at the rules, then discovered I ned the control ship to use em. Oh well.

Still working on my bat rep. The Battle Chronicler is not very good for doing AI, given the 3d aspect of the movement and what not. Also, I don't seem to be able to figure out how to have labels included on the screen to help indicate speed and altitude. Oh well. It's too bad the AI Vassal project never got done, as I think that would have provided a better source for the batreps.

Try just putting the speed and altitude in the narrative.
In fact, you would probably only need to put the altitude in, BC does a good job of movement speed.
Think of Battle Chronicler as a 'schematic' of the battle used to help visualize the placement of the models at the end of the turn.
The narrative batrep that goes along with it is what makes the turn make sense.
The pictures of the battle provide backup as to what's happening (as well as giving a chance to show off models and terrain :D ).
Take a look at the batreps on the site, particularly the last 2 (blush) and you'll see what I mean.
Unless I'm missing something critical, possible since I don't play AI, but between Matt, DaBoss and myself, we'll try to give you all the help we can.

In the original game Eldar Vampires are definitely undercosted. Tactica Imperialis adjusted their points costs to try to balance them better against the rest of the forces - in a 100pt game, for instance, you can get just 3 Eldar aircraft in, whereas with the original stats you could get 4. The Vampires went up from 22/24 points to 32/34 points.

Even with the increased cost, Eldar are still very good. Highly manoeuverable bombers/transports, and very high for fighters, they can out manoeuvre almost all other aircraft in the game. However, there are only 4 aircraft available to choose from - Nightwing, Phoenix (only better than the Nightwing if you need to be able to strafe ground targets), Vampire Hunter, and Vampire Raider (most expensive aircraft, and only better than the Hunter if you have a mission where you need to drop ground troops).

Woo hoo,

Played my first game last night with some (irregular) cardboard hexagons & a lot of paper!

Played 60 points, I was imperial, with 2 thunderbolts & a maurauder, the wife used Tau with 2 Barracudas and a Tiger Shark. I think we used a very small board (2' by 4') even for this level, as it was hard to keep everything on the board (I didn't take into account the speed of my marauder & its rubbish turning circle & gracefully performed a 180 over 5 turns and flew off the board without doing anything else!) It was a great fight & the wife likes it (which is good news)

Now, off to buy some toys for it!
