All things X-wing

I’ve got a bunch of bloodbowl (LH) and 40k batreps (viper,Sparky and mR6)sat on the shelf but they can go elsewhere. (+ infinitum of random board game in one sentence reviews-stunty has been buying basically my wishlist, summoner wars, small world, etc etc and james has been buying loads of fluffy and kids stuff.. dats my fish..FFG card games etc)

For now, following on from here anything-goes/x-wing-miniatures-game-t6673.html
Dum dum dum dum didum dum didum..

Stunty was playing the soundtracks through his phone throughout.

Ok let see, Stunty turned up at mine, as did LH.. LH is still on a nothing to do with 40k ever ever again.. so I broached my Xwing box (note all photos are from 2 starter boxed sets put together.. which seems to be how most people start off).

1 Guy has a noob tie fighter and a master ninja tiefighter (the beast)
1 Guy has 2 regular tie fighters
Image
These guys work as a team in the you go I go system it can split V easily for multiple players.

1 guy has Biggs(Tank) and luke (big on defence..now I think of it not a great combo).. 2 named X wings.
This is a points balance..although based on what we saw more cheaper stuff work exceedingly well.

Image
The game is full of necessity for fresh pots(although unlike the rather humourous david grohl take on coffee addiction, I mean vast numbers of fiddly pots to store it in.. and I've temporarily run out..I'm going to home bargains to sort that on wednesday.. need a 15th 30 compartment mini bits holder..gah)
Here is the table spread.
Image

We didn't play to the missions, and although I'm working on papercraft stuff (basically porting in the ridiculously expensive FW game that worked the same) we only used what was wysiwyg and out of the box for the evening.

We rotated around each of the 3 roles.

Battles were fast and furious and we managed 4-5 ish games.(7-11pm not counting setup or packup but thats with 2 people new to the game)
Image
You can see in this pic how the tie fighters are swarming and blocking movement paths,
Image
2 Tie fighters hit each other (DOH).. meaning they can't access actions (such as focus points for shields).. one is facing away from the x-wing (Green triangle is LOS arc) so isn't a threat.. the one pointing towards it is "the beast".. Luke has higher pilot skill so shoots first passed the blocking stupid tie to the beast taking it out. (models don't block LOS because magic 3d..rather lame excuse in book but mechanically very handy)
Image
(pic below) We're going to houserule some kind of "I can't shake him!!" rule where by super manoeuvring skill like this TIE has shown you one extra red dice.. (as we believe the only reason its not there is so that the dice you have in your hand never exceed the number in the box) This was badd ass "darth cadet".. the cheapest guy in the game who'd taken out biggs and was just taking out luke (I was most proud.. until everyone else using him did exactly the same.. a blessed rookie if ever there was one)
Image

Image
We used a 3x3 with conventional setup.. this game we tweaked the power level a bit and got out a 5th tie from stuntys 3rd and 4th boxes.
Image
this photo (below) was taken when LH and Stunty had an extra tie fighter and I had 2 astromechs.. the ability to tank wasn't as good as 5 tie fighters for poor old Biggs, he couldn't do any good back there..and so here we see poor me  chased across the board by 5 tie fighters, death is inevitable at this point.. low pilot skill move first (its a down side.) but here stunty has moved in front of me with his crap guy.. so I can't move penning me in so I can't shoot him and every one else is up my chuff... I am for want of a better word Ddddooooooooommmed.

NEXT step is painting a galactic starfield on the cloth using a toothbrush and stuff.. (not today maybe thursday)

Great pictures. I just failed a will-power test and got the GF9 death star mat to play on (on sale at The Dice Shop).

I want to spray white paint everywhere.. even at £20 (which is the cheapest I've seen it, good spot :) ).. too much for me.. thats a whole other box set.
Have you seen the tiled matt system of plastics that have room for defence towers, they aren't that much more if your spending real money,

I haven't, link?

I think the mat and some new ships turned up while I was out this morning. I'll pick it up tomorrow from the PO and then post an inventory of all my ships so far.

I had seen them on sale somewhere.. but lost the link.

Whats the size of the cardboard slab under the millenium falcon and slave 1.. is it 60x60mm?
(as I say above I'm slowly working on porting in everyones aeronautica stuff)

I'll try and remember to measure it tomorrow.

1x Y-wing
3x X-wing

Imperial

1x Tie Advanced
3x Tie Interceptor

I've also got 1 of each of the Wave 3 ships on order.

Bobba is a beast, especially with the bomb.. (some forums even say they dropped the ball and that and the Bwing are too good (and the Y wing is now called the WHY??? wing)..interested on your take and whether you can combo break him.

Ta muchly.. I'll update in this thread a bit like a project log the following;
1) making a matt out of leftovers (so far the big lesson is not to use gloss paint on a porous surface on your *BRAND NEW table fffffffffFFFF ff)
2) Fixing the dials.. as loads of tourney players say they wear out.(basically I'll do this http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BLYyuY94CZE )
3) proxying forgeworld aeronautica.. and working on the possiilities of papercraft and homebrew stuff based on existing community projects elsewhere..
Since it will be a bit slow I'll wait till I have a clump before I dump stuff in.. but until then treat it like a x-wing general thread.. do what thou wilt etc.

The Falcon seems very weak in the games we've used it in. It's a big target that will almost always get hit.

The Y-wing is a good representation of what it is in the fluff - a bomber that is crap in a dog-fight. One for scenarios really.

It has 8 hull points, not much else .. like the lamda and like biggs its there to tank all the wounds..
I'd stack chewbacca and draw their fire= 5 shields,8 hull points 43 points.. you get to look out sir (6th ed for the win) and take 1 critical damage fire card off awesome firefrigates of doom each time someone shoots at them.. and when it passes to you, chewy gets to flip it down automatically thus reducing its effects.
The way biggs does it is, he gets baby sat behind a shield of cheap fire meat.. so enemy can never target at range 1.. they always have to target at 2 or greater poor old biggs..instead of your right in their face wall of death..(hence my fubar in taking two tanks for our demo above)

Its a really quite fun game.. the problem is as each mechanic comes out I can see me and Lh WAACing it so quickly.(e.g. I got the above from playing 3 games and looking at the cards.. cheesy comes naturally..I must fight it)

mat, the falcon rules, it is a big target but it has 13 hit points and 360 radius shooting, 4 dice at close range, with a gunner you get a bonus try to kill a ship if u miss, throw chewbacca in and u ignore criticals, im not saying its perfect but its a nightmare to take down, I play mostly empire swarm and if I dont concentrate on it early it justs picks your ties off.
apparantly 2 falcons in a 100 point game is one of the most lethal forces out there
slave 1 isnt bad but the lack of 360 firing hampers my poor manouvering skills, after the last game when I hit every asteroid on the board my mate threatened to make me a guide dog card for my deck

Think yourself lucky you don't have a comissar!
Is that as crazy as it sounds, because I don't know if I should applaud or send the number of the samaritans. 8O

Ok well that went quicker than expected.. some random lady kept my kids after playscheme so I could get it finished (nice)
I based the approach off something I read about using graphic design programs to make space scapes.. so there probably is a much easier way to do this ..anyhow.
So first acquire a brushed cotton sheet from random relative over 50.. they have it, trust me..
Next measure, using 2 tape measures as a pair of compasses and a piece of wood as a set square
Image
Image I outlined the territory using a red permanent marker and some tippex(ever useful)
Image
Next white glostt paint and something with firm bristles, i used a toothbrush but it was old and not very firm (hold it vertically for less splooge effects.
Image
I then had to run outside with it as (as previously mentioned) white gloss paint on something not waterproof led to table disaster.
I started with a bold white spray..
Image
then blue patches for that 2 tone effect.
Image
Somewhere around here I added grey, because the white and blue need toning down (after spraying) in some areas to create contrasts and auras.(basically some stuff too bright some stuff fadey)
Image
Picture with normal light sapping flash-- the three things are those megablock nid things angelwing recommended sprayed grey to be asteroids.. although they need toning down a lot.
Image
modified flash (bog roll) and colours slightly exaggerated so you can see what I see.
Image
Any words are good words.. so make 'em

Simple, effective, good colors and star effects, easy to roll up and store away!

Who could ask for anything more in a gameboard.

Nicely done!
