Are you all okay?

Postby timewizard » Tue Oct 29, 2013 12:44 pm

Hello all!

Read in today's paper that Britain took one heck of a beating from a severe storm yesterday.

The article said you had wind gusts up to 80 MPH (or 128 KPH!) and that a few deaths were reported, including a teen who decided to play in the surf and was swept out to sea. And I thought it was only Americans who thought there was nothing wrong with swimming in hurricanes.

It was a year ago today that we got belted by Hurricane Sandy (how appropriate a name for a storm that hit the glorified sand bar that I live on!). Just checking in to see if everyone is okay. Hope this finds everyone well and undamaged.

Cheers mates!

Thanks guys!

It amounted to a free day off work for me due to trees on the line, that is all. Some friends had their roof smashed by a falling tree (it's a rental IIRC so not their financial problem at least).

It was also overnight so didn't really see experience it either.

It was kind of blow out really. Much more hot air than anticipated - apart from a from a few bridges closing, and trees falling down it was that bad where I am (South Bucks) I live in the sticks too, on top of the valley so had expected more.

well, ive heard this theory from a close source to me (who shall remain nameless)

the storm was just an excuse for the tree's to enact their revenge on us!

seriously, think about it, all you hear on the news is ''fallen trees here, fallen trees there, a tree crushed a house''

i rekon, the trees all got together and said ''now is our chance!''

just a theory

Cheers for asking mate.
Not too bad hereabouts (northampton, very central).
Worst was getting woke up at about 5.30 ish, cheek of the thing!
Outside was a noise like unbelieveably strong gusts of wind, so I had a quick look.
What trees I could se were stationary, but the rain was so solid, it was like being underwater!

No issue with weather up North just a normal day with a slight breeze. Not sure what all those Southerners are complaining about!!!!! :P

I can report that the roof of our friend's place was not damaged - just had a fallen branch on it. However, his Sky dish did not fare too well ;-)

All told, nothing too serious. Some blocked roads (it proved a great excuse to shut parts of the M25).

There was one very local death - tree fell on a car as the driver was on his way to work and killed him instantly. Lucky for me I already had the day booked off - it was on my route to work and a similar time to my commute - worried my parents enough to call me and check up on me!

Thanks for checking up on us TW!

Glad to hear that everyone made it through okay.

I reckon the newspaper accounts over here had it as worse than it was.

not much happened here, and I'm in the south west which was supposed to take a beating. the winds picked up at about 5am (right when I was unloading stuff in the store yard) and the rain was fairly heavy. Fortunately no property damage, just a lots of leaves which kept the carpark cleaner busy for the day.

Unless a tree limb snapped off during a high wind and dropped on him, then I pretty sure the storm had nothing to do with that!

What storm? :D

Here in the West Midlands we had some rain, but that was it. Spoke to my dad yesterday who is 250 miles south in Cornwall which was apparently hit by the storm, and he said even the plastic furniture in the garden didn't move. I can only assume it hit the south east and moved north east, missing the west of the country.
