ATA Works Stormtrooper Helmet Kit Build

Re: My next modeling project ...

Laugh it up fuzzball. :)

I'm not that short though. Average stormtrooper height was 5' 10", I'm 5' 9". Mark Hamill was 5' 7". Nuff said.

You can join Slate (ask Nige or Gav, they'll be able to give you a brief idea of who he is), he's tall and hairy and grunts a lot so is the local Wookie :)

Got the rough cutting and sanding done, although I think I might need to adjust the left side brow trim to bring it down a few mm as otherwise there will be a small gap between the trim and the top of the ear. Still need to take some more plastic off on the left side of the cap, and give the eyes and teeth a final sanding to neaten them up. Also need to get the ears trimmed down, taken off most of the excess plastic but can't cut them to fit flush until the face and cap are bolted together.

The other parcel arrived with the foam and chin straps, so I've got everything I need to get this built completely and painted.

All you need now is a replica Sterling smg and you are sorted.

Need a suit if armour too. Getting a replica Sterling with the extra parts added is the way bit, can get them prebuilt for a decent price. Armour is another matter, either it's around £1500 fully built but won't fit right, or its around £300 with a 9 month wait but needs gluing together and adding the right straps, so either expensive or very time consuming. I'd also need to lose a little weight...

Made a little more progress today, trimmed the edges a little more and f fitted the first two screws to connect the face plate to the cap. Lots still to do, but slowly getting there.

the ''mouth'' grille still seems a little off... might be worth running a file through them just to clean them up, and maybe some black backing?

and could certainly do with some rounding off on the left temple, rather noticable flat spot there!

did i mention im obscenely jealous?

Teeth and eyes are next on the list, they come under the "lots still to do" phrase. The flat spot is known as a "trap", it's supposed to be there, will be painted grey with a black outline to match the movies.

EDIT: teeth and eyes trimmed and sanded.

There is no suit, I've just got the helmet. I'm not interested in suiting up, and don't have the space to put up a dummy with the suit on.

After a few hours of trying to sand the ears to fit I now know why everyone says this is the hardest part. I managed to take too much off the left ear, but I've got the right ear as close as I can and screwed it into place. I might take a tiny fraction more of where the pencil marks are, but not until I dismantle the helmet to clean it prior to painting. Also the screw heads need to be countersunk, again that will be done when it taken apart.

Taking a break before starting in the spare left ear.

Worked on the spare left ear and am pretty happy with the result, only took an hour to get it shaped. Might adjust it a little when the helmet is dismantled to be cleaned, but it's close enough that I might not risk it and far smaller gaps than a lot of the helmets on screen in the movies.

Next job is to take it apart, wash it thoroughly, and then paint the tears, traps, and tube stripes.
