Blu Ray Support

Postby Talus » Mon Apr 30, 2012 10:52 pm

Alright folks

question for you all

anyone else having issues playing blu ray software (specifically movies) lately?

prior to a hard drive change (and OS installation etc etc) today, my drive was working fine, effectively i was using the same playback software (installed from a different disc, cyberlink power dvd 9 and this whole BD Suite garbage that was uninstalled straight away leaving just the player software)

it now tells me that i need to use an HDMI / VDA adapter, which according to everything ive read, means monitor, now, i have no hdmi ports on my monitor, yet have been watching blu rays quite happily since the drive was installed (courtesy of the fine gents at PC Tech :P) and the device manager label for it now says analogue

i've rolled back drivers on it, i've re-updated drivers on it, same for my graphics card, and nothing changes

short of shelling out for another monitor (that i just cant afford), anyone got any ideas?

No idea mate. I have a laptop with full HD capability and HD screen, and a built in HDMI port to connect to an external TV/Monitor if I wish. But it wont play Blue Ray disks... :/

I don't know blueray.. but I did have a big beef with my xbawks, and still to a lessor extent do, to do with its HDMI cable..
If I were to wildly speculate, without looking up whatever laptop\base unit and imbedded background software thing your playing from, has suddenly enacted the evils of hdmi copyprotection (win update?? bios flash to the drive thingy??)..
(The wire comes with its own copyprotection to make sure your not putting the output cable into the input of a TV recorder card or anything.. unfortunately like a sony cd in the late 90s.. it sledgehammers stops it working on legit equipment too- hence my TV being called not a TV and just flashing 'HDCP validation failed' whenever I try to watch a dvd (I have however got it to recognise its a TV for games and music by turning off all its auto detect features and forcing its resolution mode)
Perhaps those are some avenues to glance at.
(but as I say I don't blueray)
If you want my googlefu downtime, I'll need make model and firmware numbers for stuff :D
What happens if you try to play it in VLC player?

It's PowerDVD:

http://www.cyberlink.com/prog/support/c ... dVerId=947

The version you've installed probably was released after 1 Jan 2011, so has enabled the "analog sunset rule" that requires all Blu-ray playback hardware and software must use HDCP compliant connections (which is DVI with a HDCP processor on a PC, or a HDMI connection). I would guess that the PowerDVD disc you used originally was pre-Jan 2011.

You either need to install PowerDVD from an older disc, or you'll have to switch to a DVI setup. A DVI-VGA adaptor won't work either - the HDCP signal only works over HDMI and DVI, and the monitor needs to support the signal too as it's two-way process.

well i contacted asus, they dont support the drives, so they sent me to acer (who made the computer), the indian on the phone wasnt listening to me so i put the phone down

checked amazon for powerdvd discs, god there is alot of them... between £20 and £80! no copies of 9 at the time i searched, so the hunt continues

if anyone has a copy of cyberlink power dvd 9 that pre-dates jan 2011, please pm me so we can work out an arrangement for it...

Woo, so I was vaguely right..

Unless you need some crazy powerdvd-only feature that enables 15 speaker emulation or something
http://forums.techarena.in/windows-software/1332300.htm says these work, so try;

VLC-The easy noob player (although the more I dig the more I find..it has flv-mp3 conversion under the hood)- http://www.videolan.org/vlc/
The better than Windows media player, windows media player http://mpc-hc.sourceforge.net/ (this one will probably need a 3rd party codec pack strapping onto it..I suggest this one http://www.codecguide.com/ ).

Both free solutions to throw about before you try your cash.
