Cocked Die

Postby timewizard » Wed Apr 13, 2011 2:24 am

Playing a game against a new Ork player.
Needed 3+ to hit, rolled 6 black dice for a splinter cannon, 2 white dice for splinter rifles.
The dice came to rest like this.

Image

Nothing under the cocked one. No tiny piece of terrain, no sawdust or misplaced flock.
It just came to rest like this. Stopped on its corner.
The 3 of us had to take a picture of it before I re-rolled the cocked die (got a '2' and missed :( )

Anyone else ever have this happen?

Baragash (I think it was Baragash, apologies if not) had it happen right in front of our eyes at an AoS event.

and that wasn't the only one that weekend

It's a combination of the flocked surface of the table and the rounded corners of gaming dice. Casino dice would be very unlikely to do this due to the much sharper corners.

Had this happen quite a few times altho most of my gaming has been at whw so its probably more prone to it due to the way they surface their tables. I think Toby has quite a few pics of this happening

I thought it was me too, but those aren't my dice! Must have just picked up someone else's to roll ;) IIRC that was the Apoc game at the first meet I came to :)

Yep, I call it the perfect cock very loudly.
Granulated tables help this happen fairly frequently when your rolling buckets.

In terms of cock etiquette, this is the type we reroll, no clear way which it would fall (since we play on tables with granulated surfaces).. but I know that others (e.g. Matts lot) will reroll anything that isn't perfectly flat on set down (which in most tournies I know of has some guy pulling out a dice rolling tower or a lid for a flat surface). Both are right.. but its handy to add to your pregame checklist and pick before terrain. You don't want to just flop it out and when you try to swing it about and earn stern looks.
I got 2 perfect cocks in one hand once.... ..... ......

Now that's unusual but seems to happen a lot if you've been gaming a few years - but try this one out:

Now this is going to sound like a load of bull, but if you don't believe me ask ZhatanTheBlack - it was himself that threw this:

I'm rolling 36 dice against your sisters of battle. Here we go - and I roll....... 36 ones!

Now I'm no mathematician, but the odds of that happening are staggering. Needless to say it went down in club history and we both backed away from the gaming board slightly scared!

1 in 10,314,424,798,490,500,000,000,000,000 I think (ie 1 in 6^36) 8O 8O 8O

Lol, beats Phil rolling 4 6s for his bombers to pass through blast markers at BFG last week :)

I've seen an Extermintor drop 11 1s for it's shooting before as well.

Beats mine, my worst is only 26 out 30= 1s (only 1 was a 3+)

36 1s. Holy crap.

Yes the variation in opinion between our group as to what is cocked or not lead us to the default stance of "if it's not flat, re-roll it".

I also tend only to use squared dice now rather than the rounded ones. If I do use rounded ones it's the larger size, not the gw little dice.

I've only seen that happen once.

The weirdest hobby vs physics thing I ever saw was a paint "ball-bearing" of boltgun metal.
When I opened the pot lid, there was a film of paint across the top, which I blew across to break it.

Bizzarely, it formed a "wave" and flew across the paint table, where it hit and rolled, forming a perfect sphere!!!
It dried and lasted about 4 days before "popping"!
