Dominion details.

Postby killmaimburn » Mon Nov 07, 2011 7:58 am

Well on the sunday everyone vanished into 3-4 seperate groups I dragged together some wild eyed remnants who weren't going to play nazis and started teaching them dominion, next game 30 minutes on they were playing by themselves happily and speedily, the games compelling viral nature continues.. so here are the details.

(For those who didn't see it, its a deck building game, its not an 'I have Maradona 82 card from ebay that cost me £80 so I win game', there are piles of interesting cards in the middle of the table, everyone starts with the same thing (but randomised by a shuffle) and then can go different paths of buying from the piles to make better and better hands (which use actions and effects that effect you and other peoples hands)
Beyond the basics of one hand your aim is to gain victory point cards (which do nothing for you in the game but clog your hand..so gaining them is a matter of careful timing to not kill off your own future hands) You control your opponents through negative/attack cards, deliberately emptying piles (forcing the game to end prematurely) or by having resilient hands (the 2 archytypes being 1)cycling through your entire deck by using lots of actions each turn (me) 2) buying the largest amounts of highest denomination currency to always be able to buy what you want even if you only have 2 cards in your hand (james)
With friends who know how to play -2 player takes around 20-25 minutes, 4 player around 45-50. The computer game versions where your sat waiting to go I regularly finish games in 6 minutes

(links to scans of the cards, to rules debates(none really apart from for some expansions)

For those wondering about going from 4 player to 6 player, you just need to go from piles of 12 of each victory card to 18, (playing cards of jacks queens and kings?- avoids you having to buy intrigue if you really don't want to-- although several people say your meant to merge the curreny piles as well (giving you piles of 100 for those 3- guess I need to playtest my cheap ass variant before recomending it)

PC game version with 2 AI styles to play against (they play very like james).. you can choose decks and it has a campaign.. But please note the game developer isn't very happy with the creater of the game and there might be a fight to come that ends it as a project.

It has always been the prerogative of half-wits and fools to point out the Emperor has no clothes, but the Emperor remains the Emperor, and the half-wit remains a half-wit.-The Sandman (The friendly ones)

Cheers Toby. I can vouch for the game being very easy to pick and play, and it was good fun :)
