GW shop staff and the script

Postby RotweillerofJustice » Sat Apr 13, 2013 8:09 am

I'm going to have a massive winge here about GW staff and that damned script they have to abide by whenever I go int one of their stores for a look see.

Is anyone else fed up with being pounced on by over enthusiastic staff who don't take the, "I'm just browsing" phrase onboard and launch into the standard questions of-
What armies do you have
What are you collecting
What projects you got on at the mo
Etc, etc

I really hate it. To the point now that if said staff member doesn't go away after I've told them I'm just browsing I'm point blank rude. Or sarcastic. Or more likely both.

What are your experiences, thoughts?

I actually go into GW stores so rarely that it doesn't bother me so much. But I do understand your point.
I usually show them some pics on my phone. They quickly get bored and leave me alone. ;)

I haven't been into a GW store in years. While what you've written is true of most staff I've met, there have been exceptions over the years. Back in 1994/1995/1996 (don't remember the exact year!) when the Wolverhampton store had it's grand-reopening the staff were very much like myself, and I ended up being friends with the store manager Russ (and still remember staying over at his flat one night in his spare room only to find in the morning that there were dead crickets on the floor, which he explained were because he let his tarantulas roam around that room during the day while he was at work - at which point he pointed a glass box and said "Meet Tyson"; that is still to date the largest bird-eating spider I have ever seen!). Later when he left and was replaced, the new store manager was also just as approachable and lived only a few doors from me and we spent a lot of time playing PC games (and thanks to old age I have forgotten his name, I do remember sitting in the back seat of his white Toyota Supra cross-legged because he was so tall that he had to have the driver's seat pushed right back against the rear seat).

I think in general the staff pre-late 90s were much less brainwashed than they are now. A few years ago I did chat to the manager at the Solihull store, that's the only other store where I didn't feel like I was being indoctrinated, and he actually joined up here on AoS and posted for a short period. I have no idea whether he's still at the Solihull store, or even if he still works for GW.

Other than those very few GW staff (and if any of you read this post, thank you for your approach to customers!), Rotweiller has pretty much hit it on the head - being harassed from the moment you walk through the door and ignoring a polite "No thanks, I'm fine, I'm just looking" response and continuing to try pry information out of me is a sure fire way to get me to never enter the shop again.

I think the thing to remember as you are aware by your title is that it is a script and they are just doing there job, the only real way your going to avoid this is by a. Not going in a GW store or b. Go in one so often that you become a regular so they don't need to ask anymore.

I honestly can't think of a reason why any member of this site would go into a GW store other than to interact with the people in it given that everything is available here for a much cheaper price. So going in could be easily avoided if that's what you want.

Ignore them, they don't come to your house, don your helmet of "whatever" when you enter..Much less annoying than coldcalling/door to door.
Or engage them, but take the initiative, they will ask to find out stuff you like to steer your purchases.. they are fairly used to be trolled. But they are just young scroats and acceptable human beings just trying to kill time doing a crappy job.. dazzle em with physics b*&^$3s love physics.Talk about something you do enjoy but they don't have a product line for fresh water fish, current price of wheat on the stock exchange, game of thrones..and don't let it be steered back onto the script.

Try to avoid using the word "your" to, its less accusatory and if nothing else distracts you by trying to find alternative methods of communication.

Send in a lonely friend to buy a pot of paint "kind of green kind of blue".. frees up the samaritans for some other fellow.

I usually have a bit of a chat - sometimes they wander off when they realise I've been playing longer than they've been alive :)

They are just doing their job though.

I often pop into one if I want to look at something before I order it online. But the fact that I'm often not left alone is very annoying.
I appreciate that staff are doing their job but there is using common sense and giving customers the space they want when indicated and not just being a mindless servitor spouting the same dribble.
I do get it from other retailers but GW is by far the worst. I find it very oppressive.

That's why you are having a issue with this, GW does not want common sense, they do want the mindless servitor dribbling the same script, and this is what GW mystery shoppers are looking for and recording to feed back that that employee is doing his job correctly, and given your not regular in the store enough for them to know you (because they are asking the questions) so they don't know you, therefore you maybe the inquisition, therefore your getting the party line.

From GWs point of veiw they are doing there job well.

It used to bug the hell out of my Mrs when she went into the Middlesbrough store during her lunch hour to get stuff for me (before the days of Gaming Figures) so much so that she refused to go in for me and I had to go down a weekend.

Those poor souls have to follow the script or run the risk of being bollocked by the manager or having you turn out a mystery shopper and then being bollocked by the manager.

Apart from playing the guessing game 'how long until i get accosted' the best thing to do is announce loudly (so the manager can hear) that you are not a mystery shopper / head office visitor and that you will ask for help if you need it. At the till, don't rage when they ask you if you want glue / white dwarf either, just politely decline.
Be kind and treat them as human beings. I was a redshirt once and having to slavishly follow the 'commissars 10 commandments' even when you knew full well it wasn't appropriate was infuriating. The staffer will be very grateful to be let off the hook.
On the other hand, if they still insist on accosting you, loudly proclaim (so the manager can hear) that you don't appreciate the GW policy of hounding you. If that still doesn't work, then ask them if they stock squats / man O'war / epic / talisman / oi dats my leg.

of course the best policy is to not actually go in in the first place and ring Nige or Gav instead.
