Removing Paint from Plastic Models?

Postby Moony » Tue Mar 15, 2011 4:15 pm

In the past I have used Nail Polish Remover for getting rid of the paint from my metal models, however I'm not sure on which products to use when removing paint from Plastic Models. Anyone got any reccomended products or suggestions? Thanks.

I use Simple Green which is a houshold cleaner. It doesn't hurt the plastic and removes the paint completely.
Only problem is you can't get it in the UK, and I see that's where you are.
I remember someone on here recommending a product that's available over there.
I'll see if I can find the post, if not maybe whoever it was can jump in here.
Nail polish remover won't work at all, it will melt the plastic! 8O

EDIT: Found it, it's something called fairy power spray. Does that sound like something you can find over there?

Oops, gave you the ingredient, forgot the method!
I put the simple green in a glass jar (you would use the fairy power spray) and then put the models in there to soak.
Let it sit for a few days.
Don't worry, it won't (or shouldn't) hurt the plastic.
I had a plastic model soaking that I forgot about. I found it when I put another model in to strip the paint off. Must have been in the simple green for well over a month. Took it out and gave it a scrub with a toothbrush. All the paint came off perfectly and the plastic was undamaged.
Just had to give it a good wash, let it dry, then re-primed it and it was good to go.

Fairy power spray every time for plastics - spray on, allow to 'rest' covered in it, spray again and scrub off with toothbrush. Sometimes takes a little longer if the model is well coated, so might need two attempts.

Nitromors paint stripper for metal. Tip some in the tub, drop models in, come back later and pull out carefully using pliers and rubber gloves. Scrub under running water with old toothbrush. Works a treat and models come up shiny and new. Just DONT let it get in your eyes when scrubbing as sometimes it flicks.

Fairy power spray eh?

Sounds easier than the brake fluid method I've used in the past...

Considerably less toxic as well!

If anybody needs Simple Green in Redcar I should be able to get some as I work with the Americans and its just lying around! Let me know and I'll see what I can do, please bear in mind that I won't be able to get everybody some as I have to carry it home!

Just as others have said, FPS is what I use, good on plastics, metal and resin.

I've used Dettol and paint stripper products

Have you tried to compare using simple green to fairy power spray?
Do they work the same? One better than the other?

I've never actually used either of them so I couldn't tell you. Might have to use it on some of my Tau if I can't get the white varnish of them. On that subject, does anybody know how to get varnish off thats made your models go white without damaging the paint?

I've never had that particular problem. I have seen it discussed on other forums, I'll see if I can find it for you.
I don't know how well the paint stripper will work on the varnish, never tried it.

EDIT: Found one site here http://warhammer.org.uk/phpBB/viewtopic ... 87&start=0
The poster recommends applying a coat of gloss varnish over the matte finish, says it will make the 'haze' disappear, then after completely dry spray the matte on again.
It's the 3rd post down.

Just had a look and at a few other places. The general concensus seems to be to give the models another coat of spray varnish. To be fair it can't make them any worse!

Definately worth a try.
Better than stripping and repainting the entire army, then what do you do if you go through all that, matte varnish then, and it turns white again?! :cussing :banghead
