T.W.A.T. in 2011!!!

Postby ruffian4 » Wed Jan 05, 2011 4:42 pm

As many of thee dost know, T.W.A.T. HQ had a flooding related diaster.
We haven't played since about 3 weeks after last years summer tourney.

But, progress has been made and we are almost set to re-christen (or re-dedicate to Slaanesh) the gaming multiverse (16x12).

So, to recap, the central heating water tank decided to share its contents with all and sundry.
This fogged up the carpet and the stud walling. Luckily the floor was ok.

There has been a on-going problem with terrain storage.
A lot of it is polystyrene and flat base boards get put under the table.
But, they get trodden on and damaged.

As everythin was cream-crackered anyway, why not do a little re-modelling???

The T.W.A.T. bunker, is in the loft (attic/roofspace) of a semi-detached bungalo.
This forms one tall wall, to to rooftop and 3 sloped surfaces.

Previously, the rafters were panelled in and the purlins (the big, supported horizontal beams) were boxed in, to the floor. Space beyond the outside walls was of limited use, as there were only 2 small doorways to reach it.

So, carpet removed, out came the panelling and the stud work.

Image

To get all the stuff out of the way, it had to go into the newly exposed space.
Right mess, many were the terrain piece casualties (especially the church, that is really in ruins now).

Next step then, to lay some battons in and the stud-work for the knee wall.
Its 2 ft from floor level to the rafters and approx 4 ft to the top of the purlins.

Image

These went in pretty well, though not quite as straight as I had hoped.

Next was the panelling in and the additional floorbeams to take the new hardboard sections.

Image
Not bad, not bad.

Its not safe to walk on, but its under the eaves and the purlins, so only one of minute stature could even do so ...

All but the final details done, we put some carpet down (this is Stargods old bedroom carpet, lets hope it can't speak).

Do not fall down here, it hurts. 8O
Stargod x 1.
Caspar x 1.
Ruffian x 2.

Can you see the circular indentation on one of the treads?
That was my knee!!!

:5forbidden

So, nearly done!
Just a few bits and bobs now ... :D

Very nice. I need to get my attic space cleared out so I can finish boarding the floor - I've got about 1/3 of it done with 18mm thick particleboard screwed into the rafters, the rest is either just loose boards or boxes balanced over the bare rafters.

Once I get all the baby stuff out, and the LEGO sold off, I should have enough room to move things around and board it section by section. I'm also going to probably add in some lightweight shelving around the outer edges so that it's easier to get boxes of stuff in and out (right now if I need something from the bottom I've got to turf out whatever is piled on top too). I won't put vertical boarding in like you have, I'll leave the outer edges accessible so it's easy to use it all for storage, but I will insulate and board the "ceiling" so that the roof space is warmer. It already has a skylight on the back slope of the roof, but I do need to put a fixed light in for times when it's so dark that fumbling around might result in knocking all my 40k stuff over.

With the two 6' tall bookcases (set upon the massive I beams that were installed when I had the chimney breasts removed in the rooms below, right over the load bearing wall below, and bolted to the brick wall between my roof space and next door's, so there's no chance of them falling down through the ceiling) I've got up there already I've got enough shelving to hold about half of my 40k stuff, the rest is in boxes or in foam trays stacked up to the side of the bookcases or piled up in front of the shelves (making my rulebook, codexes, and IA books somewhat inaccessible at the moment :() so I do need to sort out better storage for my gaming stuff I'll probably set up some more shelving attached to the remaining chimney brickwork either side of the bookcases.

I won't risk turning my attic into a gaming area though - while it's tall enough in the middle (around 9') it quickly drops and I just know Slate would end up putting his head through the roof tiles or falling down the stairs (which are 10' high thanks to my 1930's house with high ceilings!). A 10' fall from the attic would probably result in finding his body in the living room after having crashed through the bedroom floor :P

Once I get the garage cleared out (which should be happening soon) I might have enough space in there for gaming, although I'd only use it if I needed to have game boards/terrain/models set up for more than say a weekend as I'd prefer to play in the dining "room" (part of the living room since I had the wall between them knocked through) on the sturdy dining table in the warmth. I guess I could line the garage with insulated boarding and put fixed lighting in, but it's a lot of hassle.

I didn't comment yesterday because you said a few more bits and bobs and I thought you were half way through a monster post.
It looks cool. I might have tried to hinge a few of those side pieces,if I had any skill, to put boxes(/real attic crap) in but other wise..

Yeah, its similar upstairs.
Not too bad for us, we are all about 5.10 to 6ftish, but even then, some of the support beams are concussion hazards!

Part of the whole thing was a ruthless clear-out, so not much junk left.

Its done enough to get a few games in, so the bits and bobs will get done whenever. :D

Allright! Batreps to follow from T.W.A.T. HQ!
I'm lucky that I have a basement. It's been finished off into kids playroom with enough room left over for Dad to set up his WH40K table from time to time!

@Ruffian, that's quite an impression you made on that ladder mate!
