How will 8th Edition change my Vampire Counts

Postby DaBoss » Sat Jun 19, 2010 7:58 am

After thinking about my Skaven and feeling happy that the army still works in 8th Edition. Wondered about my Vampire Counts and how it effects them.

I remember when we had the change from 5th to 6th edition - my Undead army (which could have a mixture of Vampire and Tomb King type units) went completely down hill and I stopped playing them completely.

Will this happen again? Lets see.

1) Will it be worth using the Horde Rule - Zombies & Skeletons in 10 frontage and 4 to 5 ranks?
Probably the only way these units will survive and get some attacks back as they have such low Intiative and you can't count on Fear working.

2) Unstable Rule - need to have a look at this one next time I see the book.

3) No more than 3 of the same Special or 2 of Rare.
Should not be a problem as I never did take that many of each type - no spam lists.

4) Magic - Black Coach - this could end up being supercharged very quickly and really cause problems to your opponents magic phase - will have to see whay the FAQ amends this as?

5) More Magic - no more 1 dice Invocation of Nehek - not just the fact that on a 1 or 2 it fails (you had to roll 4+ and at best 3+ before) but that it will end that spellcasters turn for any more spells.
So will likely be going with 2 dice minimum.
Summon Undead Horde starts to look much more useful.

6) Corpse Cart - Will now require power dice to cast its bound spell for ASF

Good news though is will only require 25% core
so 40 Skeletons (10 front by 4 deep) with Command = 340pts
2 x Zombies (20 raise more in magic phase) = 160pts
= 500pts

Thoughts on this?

Ive been working on lists for 8th vamps and haven't quite found one I like yet. I think it will be more a case of getting them on the battlefield and doing some trail and error.

I am looking forward to not seeing the 10 man units and then relying on magic to boost them up!

I agree with you that horde on skeletons and zombies is probably not worth it but on ghouls it could be really good.
a 10 x 4 unit packs 40 poisioned attacks which is nothing to sneeze at.

I also don't think maic will be hampered to much either. As every character (apart from wight king) is a magic user, each wizard will have a chance to channel (Im sure one will take the item which gives +1 to channel), master of the black arts and the black peripit, I believe the total dice for each vamp magic phase will be fairly high.

Also casting Inv of Nehek on 2 dice adding your magic level mean it will almost always be casted. More relable then the 1 dice spam.

Are you going to be putting your amies up to 3000 pts at any point? Ive played a couple of games of 8th at 3k and it plays around the same time as a 2k 7th game.
Yes I study Psychology, no I can't read your mind.........yet!

Agree - my large units of Ghouls do look good (have 140 old ghouls currently for my Strigoi) - but might start with testing the rules with my Mantic Skeletons and Grave Guard army.

Remember the number of dice that a player can have in his pool can never go above 12, even with channelling or items - so you may end up not being able to use the dice stored in the periapt. I wonder if the FAQ will change 'Black Arts', otherwise it's a good ability to give you more dice if you only have a couple of Vampires (or even just one).

The more I look into the army builds the more I think games are going to move to a larger size - the amount of attacks both shooting and combat is at least doubled, templates will hit more and magic is brutal.

Looking at the photos of the set games in the book, it looks like they want to up the scale to epic battle size.
Plus can't fail to help sales can it???
