Malifaux

Postby DaBoss » Tue Oct 18, 2011 12:59 pm

While waiting for the start of the next round of games at Tempus Fugitives Age of the Emperor, I was browsing past War Machine and came across the Malifaux blisters. Intrigued as having heard a few more things being said about it on the Internet, I asked if I could have a look at the Rulebook;

Most interested to see how a game is won, as one of the reasons I don't like the sound of WarMachine is that if you kill your opponents Main character - you lose automatically; forget going for the mission or objective - I'm not into these kind of one dimensional tournament style games for a simple skirmish.

Glad to say that in Malifaux, the missions (called encounters) are very interesting giving you victory points for achieving things other than killing your opponent. In a way they are very similar to Necromunda missions except that both sides can have different encounter objectives.

Next I looked at the rules as I was worried about the lack of rolling six sided dice (let alone any shaped dice) but the process of using playing cards face value to determine score is interesting, more variation than just a d6 or d10, plus you can "cheat" fate with a card from your hand to modify the result.

So I was hooked especially as the mini rule book was only £9 and a starter crew of about 6 models for about £20, I decided to pick up two factions.
Arcanists in the form of Rasputina and her ice bound minions and Neverborns in the form of Pandora and her scary little children.
Very nice models, hardly a spot of flash or mold line (or bubbles - take note GW!)
only the Ice Golem caused me any trouble building, but should be ok with a bit of green stuff.
Will really enjoy painting them up, as it's only 6 models to start with, can spend a bit extra time on them.

As to playing the game, I think White Wizard at the club posted a while back in having got some himself. Will make a change from playing massed battles in Warhammer and 40K.

Will post some photos later this week, maybe start a blog on how I progress.

If anyone wants a demo game at the meet let me know cos I love the game. I'll be taking all my Malifaux stuff and hope to convince people on the day but would be good to get some takers before hand.

@DaBoss dont expect to make friends putting Pandora on the table lol.

Interesting - is Pandora nasty then?
Thing is when you buy the models you can't see the stat card to see what they are like, and the rule book does not contain a list of the models or stats.
So I was going on what I liked the look of for painting.

Is their a list of the stats somewhere on the Internet? , had a look on Malifaux website but could not see anything.

If we get time, might squeeze a game of Malifaux in then Stunty?

Ok the Malifaux Handbook which you have contains all the core rules from the Malifaux Rulebook and from Rising Powers. What it doesnt contain is fluff and model stats.

Pandora can be very nasty once you've mastered her (some people say broken). She is probably the worst master to learn the game with as she is quite squishy (Neverborn are in general) and has a LOT of subtle rules to get your head round. She also plays in very a different way to any other faction (again Neverborn). I personally learnt with Pandora and while I didn't find her overly difficult to play her, I sometimes struggled with some of the more core elements of the game that other factions take for granted. Rasputina is a good master to learn with and she is powerful too.. (I own too many masters lol)

Here's a site I found that has stat cards and all manner of downloads.

Thats a very useful site I've printed off quite a lot from there.. Those stat cards are from the malifaux rulebook, when they updated to version 2 they put them on the website for people to update. the tactica for Pandora on there is really useful.

I found a malifaux sitre the other day that was quite cool resource wise.. but didn't link it it appeared to have scans of 3 magazines, and basically the above counters grouped into categories- (not the tactictas though)
If I find it I'll send link and report myself at the same time in case it includes bad things.

Hi Phil

Yes, I've been playing Malifaux for a while now. I also just picked the models I liked the most, so I have the Victoria’s set, expanded with the Convict Gunslinger, Hans the Sniper, Rusty Alice, Jack Daw and a couple of Ronin’s for good measure. The Victoria’s are known as "glass cannons" and I can vouch for that!

Don't be mis-lead by the small number of models in a crew though. A beginner level 20 Soul Stone Scrap will take a good 2-3 hours what with learning the rules and special character abilities and so forth...

All the official stat cards and rules manual can be downloaded from the official website for free: wyrd-games.net/forum (on the menu on the left under "v2 statcards" etc.)

and for the best Malifaux tactica bar none, visit pullmyfinger.wikispaces.com

So Phil

I saw your Malifaux paiting blog. Nice job so far.

Do you fancy giving them a whirl in two weeks, Mon 14th Nov?

If anyone else wants to sit in on the game you'd be more than welcome.
