The Vampire Counts Campaign Weekend

Postby DaBoss » Mon Sep 19, 2011 6:05 pm

Went to the latest Tempus Fugitives Campaign Weekend - The Vampire Counts.

In the pack there was a list for Arkhan the Black and his Tomb Kings Army.
So spent some time digging out old Skull Catapults and Bone Giants (Raf Partha models) and painting up 100 Tomb Guard (Mantic Skeletons and Revenants) along with Arkhan on foot.

Travelled up with Ian (Cannibals of Nagash) and Jamie (Khainite Dark Elves) to Maelstrom for the weekend.
Joined the group of 27 other players (not as many as Stu would like - giving concern that another campaign weekend for Warhammer would not be viable!!!).

Separated into our factions, as I was the only Tomb King player and the other Undead forces did not want to ally with me, Arkhan set sail for the Vampire Coast.

This being a narrative weekend than a tournament things can be influenced or dictated by peoples actions.

Game 1 - Arkhan landed on the beach and raised himself a Tower as base of operations - but was besieged by the Ogre faction - so 3000pts Ogres vs 2500pts Tomb Kings with me holding the Tower.
Brutal game leaving Arkhan eaten by a Thundertusk!!!
Turn 4 - I had a lone Liche Priest in the Tower as his bodyguard had been destroyed during the last Ogre assault, turned to the Ogre players and asked them to roll the dice to see if the game ended - they both roll a 6 - so game ends a victory for the Tomb Kings.

Game 2 - Having reassembled himself, Arkhan descides to go and acquire some artillery weapons from some trespassing Nuln Engineer Army.
As the Tomb Kings slowly march across the table, the Skull Catapults destroy 1 Cannon and 2 Mortars with some superb counter battery fire, while an outflanking Bone Giant destroys another Mortar in combat before being rammed to death by the Steam Tank.
On turn 6 we finally get the major units into combat but no-one is destroyed
Result Tomb Kings give away 350pts while taking 512pts from the Nuln Engineers - Draw (though found out later that if the difference is more than 100pts then its a Win - for some reason I thought it was 200pts?!?

Game 3 - Not satisfied with the broken Mortars from the previous engagement, Arkhan sets his sights on some Bretonnian Trebuches. The Player had built a beautiful all Peasent Army led by a Paladin on Hippogriff (he won best painted army)
Special rules allowed us both to advance under the fire of our artillery - again I manage to counter battery fire a couple of his artillery pieces. I won the roll for 1st turn and managed to charge 11" across the table straight into the Bretonnian lines smashing him to pieces and following through into his artillery. Meanwhile the valiant Paladin charges a Bone Giant and gets swashed between it's fists.
Another Win to the Tomb Kings - but still no workable artillery pieces.

Game 4 - Returning to the beach, Arkhan finds a Lone Dwarf Army trying to reach their ships to leave the accursed land with all the gold collected by his faction!!!
The Player sees my army arrayed before him and asks to parley with Arkhan - he offers me the win and 5 gold coins (the amount you would get for a win) if I let him pass through to his ships. Arkhan is happy to do this and takes the gold. We play the game - Tomb Kings are winning again due to some very accruate counter battery fire killing the Dwarf war machines, but then Arkhan manages to cast Purple Sun towards a 25 strong Slayer unit but rolls a Misfire for distance which results on the Purple sun landing on his own unit and killing everyone but 4 Tomb Guard, now that he can't 'Look out sir' the Dwarves put a pin point cannon ball through him.
Result - would have been a loss to the Tomb Kings - but with the parley counts as a Win.

Game 5 - Arkhan makes a deal with the Dark Elves and is ambushed by the Skaven (who have been hired by the Duchess of Mousilion). The game is brutal and one sided due to some brilliant plays by Jamie - Herioc Killing Blow on a Hellpit Abomination and massed of poison hits from his Witch Elves on Clanrats.
Arkhan managed to suck the life out of Meek Grey Seer with his Reality Bomb (special campaign item).
Big Win for the Tomb Kings yet again.

End result 4 wins and 1 Draw (should have been 4 wins and 1 loss - but thats campaign play for ya)

Surprisingly the Winning Faction was ------- Tomb Kings
I'd played some get Death and Glory strategies just when I thought I could win and that made my score soar (plus I was a faction of one so did not need to average my score across multiple players) - those Undead players should have followed my leadership :D

A great weekend and the faction win means I get to go to the next Warhammer Campaign for free - which is titled 'Return to the Vampire Coast'.

Now what should I take this time???
Where's the Dogs of War list....

Re: The Vampire Counts Campaign Weekend

Ill put my report in here as well

Game one - 1500 pts doubles vs 2500 pts skaven

The Black Ark lands on the Vampire Coast and the Cult of Khaine looks to make a base the find a suitable tower only to find it infested with rats. After a quick, brutal assault my executioners take the watchtower. All is going well until a hell pit appears behind our lines and rushes into my partners executioners. The damn thing is cut down twice and both times it gets back up! My unit in the tower is wiped out and clanrats take control as the game ends.

Result - Loss.

Game 2 2500pts vs 2500pts dwarves

Ended up playing Swampy and his crazy dwarf army. His 2500 pts had 4 units in it; 2 bolt throwers and 2 units of 46 longbeard rangers. One of the units had 4 chracters in; Bugman, a BSB and 2 dwarf lords. Needlees to say I destroyed the every single dwarf on the battlefield. Againest the big units I didn't lose combat by less than 15!

Result - Win

Game 3 2500pts vs 2500 pts Cult of Nagash

As the other undead didn't want Arkans help (Phils army from above post), he hired the dark elves to teach them a lesson. So we desended on the ghoul armies and I ended up playing againest a army with 180 ghouls. A big punch up ensued in the middle of the board and out of the two cults it was the dark elves who were left standing. I almost snached defeat from the jaws of victory when Nagash turned up but even he couldn't stop the might of Khaine.

Game 4 - 4 champions were called upon for a speical game and I took up the call.

Myself, an empire, bretonnian and dwarf player desended into a deep cavern to bring back riches for our faction. However a massive lizardman army had other ideas. A 5500pt Lizardman army was in the middle of the board and myself and the other 3 each had a corner. We kept track of the units we destroyed and who ever had the most VP at the end won. The lizardmen I was fighting would not break so the empire took the victory. Bloody cold blooded scaly critters!

Game 5 - 1500pts doubles vs 1500pts doubles Skaven

As Phil said above we teamed up to take on the Skaven forces. Phil and I talked before and thought our armies would work well together and we even had a plan on set up and the result was lots of dead rats. My army walked through the rats as if they weren't there and Phil didn't lose a single VP as the skaven bounced off him.

Result - Win

So 3 wins out of 5 and a great weekend overall. Highlight for me was being nomainated for best army which I was really happy with.

The follow on campaign is on the 21st and 22nd July 2012 and Im defo going. Im thinking a savage orc horde will be coming out of the jungle to play.

I would urge anyone who wants a fun weekend playing warhammer with a great bunch of players to going to the event.

Sounds good, i may join you with some ogres led by the mighty Golfag
"Crom, i've never prayed to you before, i have no tongue for it.
No-one, not even you, will remember if we were good men or bad. Why we fought and why we died.
All that matters is that two stood against many, thats whats important.
Valor pleases you lord Crom so grant me one thing, grant me revenge.
And if you do not listen....then to hell with you!"

Re: The Vampire Counts Campaign Weekend

Well not to be out done I will tell you my campaign and just to put the record right it was not that we did not want an undead army (though the Sartosan players did look a liabilty) it was Arkhan's demands that he lead the force that we were not happy with.

Game 1. Cult Nagahs 2.5K vs Empire 2* 1.5K

Being out numbered I started with some money to buy items and I got the casket or sorcery which allowed D6 dice from any magic phase to be returned. As it turned out the need for me to use all my dice meant it was not much use.
Game was Watch tower which I had and in went 20 Ghouls. First turn they charged it with a unit of 40 WS5, poisoned attacking swordsmen with two heroes and a BSB! Rolling 11 they got there and it was all over. Ghouls buzzed and no matter how much I attacked the tower even winning the combat by 9 on one round they would not leave - Stubborn Ld 9 with re-roll!!!
Result was lose to Cult but an agreement with the Duchess meant I gave them this gold stuff and I got the win!!!

Game 2 2.5K High Elves

We rolled battle for the pass and he decided to sit in the ruins & rough terrain and hope that the Stegadon and Carnasaur he bought with a Lion Chariot would win him the game???? Later one dead Stegadon, Chariot and his bolt thowers being chwed up by my flying ghouls mean he lost over 300 points to my nothing. Glorious victory!

Games 3 2.5k Dark Elves

Having played Jamies I thought it could go either way especially as we had meeting and were only 12" apart. Unfortunately my opponent got the first move and jumped my units. However their low toughness compared to mine meant it was a grim battle and was going to the line until we had to stop for dinner and then the quiz. The Dark Elve player had it at that point in attrition but her main 500pt + unit had one champion in it and if I had killed him it would have been a victory. I also then realised at the end if the game that she had also had one more turn than me!!!! So a loss but a moral victory.

Game 4. 2.5K Ogres

I fancied my chances with this what with my entire army having poisoned attack but I did not count on the Bleeding Heart!!! The new ogre item that causes all wizards to roll on the miscast table if in range of 5 * D6 inches. My opponent rolled a 6 so that was all my necromancers!!! By then 3 were dead, 2 on a wound each, about 50 ghouls lost in various explosions and none of the 11 magic dice I rolled left. All over! We played another turn but by the end I had 10 ghouls left on the board. And the dammed thing is only 50 points!!! Did they play test that item? I think not
After last times loss the to reality bomb (1.7K lost in turn 1) Jamie announced I am now the campaign Bitch!

Game 5 Doubles Cult vs Empire each with 1.5K

Here it all came together. With my fellow Nagash player we set about making up for all the lost brains!!! Whilst holding onto my flank we pushed his forward with all the benefits we could give it. Then in combat we butchered them with the use of the staff of dammnation which as Bound 3 lets all undead who can have one attach. So for a hoard that 30 attacks in the magic phase with re-rolls as we had a Van Hals on it. We then did 40+ attacks with re-rolls in the combat phase before they got even to reply. Combat results was something like -27!!! He then left the game (had the hump a bit but hey it happens) an we turned onto the other player where my small 20 man unit had killed a dettachment and was killing a gun each turn!!! One more turn and he was out. Crushing victory again with no losses! Killing all an undead unit to get the points can be really hard sometimes.

So a 3-2 win and for the first time more wins than losses. Must be getting good at this :)

Great time was had by all but we need your support!!! Only 25 people means the events are not making money and next years will be the last if we do not get another 10-15 people in total. So start saving now! Its purely selfish on my part as I want to continue to go to these events.
