German armoured train hits first hurdle ...

by Spack on Wed Aug 08, 2012 3:49 pm

I've managed to get a Hornby 8F locomotive + tender to base the Panzerzug on (it should be a German BR 57 0-10-0 locomotive but they're pretty expensive!), but now it's arrived I've found a couple of problems. The first is that I didn't realise it was a tender drive set I was getting, so I can't use the chassis I already had for the tender. The second is that the loco and tender are both a bit longer than the Panzerzug - while I could get out my dremel and trim them down to close to the right size, my son has decided that he likes the 8F too so the train will now be interchangeable; the 8F tender shell will be removed to put on the Panzerzug tender shell as the 8F shell is too high to cover over, and the loco shell will be built to fit over the existing 8F shell with about 15mm longer armour and clearance for the front bogey, allowing it to run as a German train or as a British steam train both in the 1942-1945 period.

Panzerzug loco and tender remodelled

by Spack on Thu Aug 09, 2012 10:57 am

In order to accomodate the Stanier 8F loco and tender that I'm using instead of a BR 57, the loco and tender have had to be adjusted to acommodate the additional length and different wheel positions. I've tried to keep the overall as close as possible, with the armour panel edges at midpoints between axles and the access hatches on the loco centred on the driving wheels.

At the top is the original model, below is the extended version to fit the 8F.

And here are the unfolded versions ready to print.

Finally a shot of the half train model with the extended loco:

Panzerzug first rolling mockup ready

by Spack on Thu Aug 09, 2012 2:05 pm

The extended loco and tender shells have been printed, cut out and glued, and tested for fit. I've had to make a couple of adjustments to the armour over the piston head to allow the piston to travel fully, and remove some of the armour forward of the piston to allow the front bogey to turn on tight corners. Overall I'm pleased with the result, the train runs round the entire track without getting caught on any of the scenery. It'll go round 1st radius, but will usually be run on 2nd radius curves.

Panzerzug mockup of Kommandowagen

by Spack on Fri Sep 14, 2012 8:08 am

A little more progress on the train, this time with a test of the Kommandowagen. The Sketchup model was flattened and printed out, and then glued together to check that it would work on the model railway. I also built a test chassis rig from from plastic I-beam, with brass point bearings and Hornby 14mm metal wheels, spaced at 70mm and 80mm centres so that it could be used to test both the armoured railcars axle spacing (70mm) and the longer spacing on the Pz38t tank carrier wagon (80mm, bearings can be seen at right hand side of pic that the axle can be moved onto) around the 1st and 2nd radius track on the railway. Even on the longest spacing it makes it around the 1st radius curves without derailing, although at speed it might well come off.
