For the AoS painting competition I have taken a model I had almost finished building for my son's train set, and attempted to make it look a little more model-like. The original JPG template can be downloaded here: http://sega.jp/pc/soft/advd2001/img/pm3_01_.jpg (instructions here: http://sega.jp/pc/soft/advd2001/sp_pmt1.html ). This is a 1/144 scale model, but I needed 1/87 to match the scale of the Panzerzug train being built so scaled it up in Photoshop and rearranged the components to fit on an A4 sheet of card.
Here's the model built, with the original inkjet colouring. I've left the tracks off to make them easier to paint.
A few additional details were added, such as nylon string for the towing cables and some extra small card pieces for the engine covers. A small piece of cocktail stick was thinned down to be used for the hull machine gun.
Next the primer is sprayed on, use a few thin coats instead of one thick one to reduce the risk of making the card sag.
The turret and hull were given a base coat of Tamiya black/green, followed by a generous drybrush of Space Wolf Grey. A further quick drybrush of Skull White was added on top. Areas were left for the cross insignia and turret number. The cables were painted Chaos Black and drybrushed with Tin Bitz and a little Bolt Gun Metal. Badab Black wash was added around the hatches and covers, and thin streaks added over the grey to represent water and weather marks. Flesh Wash was added around some hatches and in little streaks from the upper edges, as well as on the exhausts, to represent rust marks that have run.
The tracks were painted with Bestial Brown, followed by Boltgun Metal for a few lines at the front and back for raised link areas. Vermin Brown and Graveyard Earth were used to add some highlights, along with Badab Black wash.
After painting the the tank I found a spare piece of styrene foam and sprayed on a little primer in two streaks to melt it to represent worn areas where convoys had passed. The flat areas were painted Space Wolf Grey and then Skull White, the earth areas in Chaos Black followed by Bestial Brown. The figures are some OO scale cheap Chinese figures, with uniforms painted in Chaos Black with Codex Grey drybrush.
