Blog Subject: | Panzerzug BP44 First Mockup |
To make sure that the locomotive and tender won't look too big or too small alongside the existing OO scale trains that my son has on his railway a card mockup of the Sketchup model has been made. Using the Flattery plugin it was pretty easy to unfold the model faces to create a flat printable mesh that could then be folded and glued. This is scaled at 1:87 (which is HO scale rather than OO, but means that the train will be in proportion to the track width), and next to a small 0-4-0 steam engine looks about the right size. This card mockup will also be used to find a chassis to fit the locomotive, and I've already got donor parts for the tender chassis from an old flat bed carriage which has 6 wheeled bogies at each end (the tender is sitting on one of these bogies in the photo below). Looking good do far bud. Why not stick with the card version, and save yourself a little painting? My Dad is starting a 00 layout, early BR era. Not sure he'll be adding one of these though. Pity really. |

Cheers for the comments. Card is ok, but I'm looking to build something more robust and with more details - I'm aiming to add rivets, ladders, open hatches, and also hopefully make it able to stand up to the odd knock or two. The camo is also pretty rough - it's only there to see how it would look, but I'm tempted to go with either a basic yellow or grey scheme rather than the later war 3 colour camo, so painting isn't a problem (and should look better than my clumsy attempts at texturing a 3D model). If all goes well the final train will be really long with a total of 11 items; loco + 2 tenders, 2x infantry wagons, 2 x commando wagons with flak and heavy guns, 2 x tank carrying flatbeds, and 2 x flat wagons with Panzer IV turrets , with the loco in the middle. If I get the Leopold built too that's another 40cm ish of train length, this thing will be huge! |
