Blog Subject:  Paper tanks - Tiger II "Konigstiger"

Last night I went looking for free paper tanks in order to supplement the train build, and stumbled across this site: http://www.terra.dti.ne.jp/~yoshidom/ It's in Japanese, but the pics next to the links make it easy to figure out what each free kit is. I grabbed the 1/72 Tiger 2 from here : http://www.terra.dti.ne.jp/~yoshidom/in ... 8-tig2.pdf

Putting the kit together was pretty easy, once I'd seen the instructions for the Panzer IV from the site page (http://www.terra.dti.ne.jp/~yoshidom/in ... -pkw4g.pdf ) as this included the details of what to do with each line. Solid lines are cut, dashed folded outwards, dot-dash folded inwards. Black stars are areas that are glued, white stars are where the black stars glue to on the reverse side. Fine dashed line are areas where other parts fit. I used thin card rather than paper to add a little more rigidity, although looking at the tracks it appears to have been designed for thicker card.

I didn't take pics during the build, but will do when I build the next tank. Unfortunately the first one is too big - the kits are scaled at 1/72 which is a standard model scale, but the BP44 train I'm building is at 1/87 so the tanks need to be 20% smaller :? Also had problems with the mantlet as the card parts wouldn't bend, which is why it's missing on the tank, I'll probably make something to fit from a blob of greenstuff on the 1/87 version.

What isn't obvious from the photos is the level of detail in the kit - for instance, there are two layers of road wheels overlapping with about 3mm between the hull and inner layer, and 3mm between the inner layer and outer layer, with some very clever folding to create the inner layer and the the supports for the outer wheels in one piece. The engine cover on the rear has lots of raised pieces, as well as little hatches on the turret, and there's even a machine gun on the front of the hull.

Later today it'll be getting an undercoat of Halford's grey primer spray (I've already sprayed a scrap piece of card to make sure the paint won't ruin it), and with the raised details that are part of the kit it should take drybrushing really well and look also as good as a plastic kit version would.
