AOS Painter of the Month Competition - June 2013

TW, sorry to hear about your loss.

How big is Robbie? Looks like a few big models this time around. I was toying with some 28mm figures, but beginning to think I might have to go larger just to outdo the rest of you! The Phantom Titan should be about large enough ... maybe not.

Will try to sort out my entry by the weekend, going to have to dig in the attic since everything got moved around and packed up when I swapped all the shelving around.

8O

The Phantom will have to wait, it needs a lot of work before it's even ready to be base coated as the previous owner tried to undercoat it with GW Chaos Black spray and make a poor job of it. GW sprays are, at least in my experience, crap at being used as a primer, and it'll have to be removed. Also being an old early Armorcast resin model the surface it quite badly pitted, so it'll need some filling and sanding too, and two of the vanes were broken and need pinning properly before filling and sanding where the cracks are.

I'll pop up to the attic in about an hour and pick something out. I can go as small as an epic space marine (got a bunch of metal Mk6 figs kicking around) but after the German infantry figure I'll think I'll stick to something a bit larger, I'm getting too old to paint little things; back in the old days I amazed myself, given at how I don't paint, that I managed to paint a pupil on an epic space marine sgt (the other eye being bionic), and also a banner on an epic Ultramarine captain with the omega wet blended from yellow to red - I think I'd be lucky to paint one a single colour these days.

Failing that I need paint the garage door and front door very soon - would either of those count? ;)

LOL, good that Talus! You're reading my mind again.

Thanks for the condolence messages mates, appreciated. My best friend and former partner in the Police Dept. (hence the family member) lost his 43 year old son to a massive heart attack. Came out of the blue. I was a week solid with him and his family. Still not 100% but getting there.

@Spack, Robby is going to be roughly 7" tall when finished. If I can get it done this month, I am going to really blow away the suggested time on the side of the box.
It says "10 years and up", I can't believe it would take 10 years to build this kit. After all, it's not like it's a guillotine!

I have to strip it and prime it before painting, so yes I will be able to provide photos of a primed shot before the entry date ;)

I was quite tempted to post a picture of a blank sheet of paper, as I will be painting a portrait picture of a model this month. Alas I couldn't find a way to cunningly circumvent the 'painting actual physical model' rules... haha :)

just a quick update
quiet Saturday so managed to get quite a bit done, built the main engine and prop, managed to jury rig a bit of metal rod into the prop so I can spin it when its finished.
built the engine as per the instructions and realised when it was finished I could have left out 80% of the fiddly parts as you cant see them when the engine is finished. but because of the time and effort I spent I decided to paint the engine and try to make the cowling removable when I finish the model later. built and painted the cockpit, again with some ridiculously tiny pieces, and built and painted the pilot.
I had spent a few hours this week looking at pics online to try to get an accurate colour scheme for the pilot and cockpit. the goos thing about airfix is that it gives you a couple of colour schemes for the planes for real pilots so I decided to go for the plane of one Josef 'Pips' Priller, german fighter ace, the main reason that his plane has the bright yellow nose and that is what I allways liked about the Messerschmitt
tommorows job is to finish building the fuselage and wings, and get everything primed for painting next week

painting updates!

working up the armor panels on galactica

ImageImage

the base colour is panzer dark grey (Was meant to be black grey, but an error got me this one, a little lighter than id have liked but it works) and the armor panels are pale blue grey

now i know its pretty light, but i want this one to stand out next to acropolis (and any future battlestars, i have 9 more plates to use! ;) ), and with what i have planned, i think it could really work quite well

speaking of light, base colour is on pegasus

Image

this one you can see the base colour next to a test section for the top layer (test on the left, base on the right), its making good progress so far, given its twice the size of galactica and took for freakin ever to build :P

Image

i know it seems a backwards way of doing things, but it WILL get a little darker before im finished, gonna see about putting the panel lines in tomorrow, and any corrections i make will be done with different shades to add a little break up to her

the rate im going with these, i might just have to add another galactica kit to the entry :P
