AOS Painter of the Month Competition - June 2013

last weeks wip
so ive been building this plane and wondering why I struggled so much as smaller child, I know the engine and cockpit has been fiddly but its gone together without too much drama............ then I tried to glue the fuselage together .........................
lets just say I have swore a lot last week
the bloody thing just wouldnt go together, the back fitted fine but the two halves of the front were not wide enough to fit the engine in, I spent hours gluing and clamping, using pegs and rubber bands, but everytime I thought id cracked it the two sides would split open. nothing for it but to thin the engine down. after much trimming and filing I finally got the thing to stay together despite a visible gap along most of the seams.
then the wings wouldn't fit flush....................more swearing followed by filing and trimming before I had the thing built
after a copious amount of green stuff all I had left to do was to fit the engine cowling and I was done.
the cowling wouldn't fit
not only was the engine still to wide, but the machine guns built just in front of the cockpit were too big. after butchering the machine gun assembly I finally got the engine cover on, no chance of having it removable because of the shoddy fitting so I bit the bullet and glued it down. I had to melt the plastic slightly with a heat gun to stretch it to fit and then covered up the seams with green stuff
next job to paint the bugger

further wip
managed to get the seams sanded down and painted the whole thing in black primer, hopefully I can get the first base coat on tomorrow, im going to try a tip I got off a modelling site to get the correct underside grey colour. they suggested painting a base coat of blue/grey then a thinned down layer of light grey

i wont lie here paul, i went looking for the fill lines, couldnt find them

you did a damn good job putting that thing together!

not to add pressure or anything, but entry closes at midnight GMT on the 27th, little under 3 days from now

but i have every faith you can do it :)

now, i have another update myself here

ladies and gentlemen (and timewizard), i give you... Pegasus

ImageImage

Image

im starting to question my sanity, when i removed the inner sections of the flight pods to add the brass, i really shouldnt have bothered since you cant see anything past the first inch!

well, i guess you can shine a light in one end and see it out of the other, so thats sort of maybe a bonus :P i just wont be bothered with that in any future mercury class kits

there are some minor corrections to make, and the bases for both still need painting (had to give myself something to do tomorrow :P) but they're both ready for entry

also realised i hadnt painted the windows on galacticas nose, rookie mistake X)

side by side shots will be available tomorrow once the bases are done, entry pic in around the same time

(before anyone says it, i know the panel lines are completely defined, and it looks dirty, thats the intended effect, compared to Galactica, Pegasus was brand new, even during the first few eps of season 3, the only definition the armor had was a little shadow here and there, and some very minor colour changes, i opted for a little more defined look and a harsher colour difference. the camera doesnt do it justice, cause in person, the thing looks like what people called it, the Beast ;) )

a pack of cookies to whoever can tell me galacticas name if pegasus was the beast :P

Gah! I'd better get started then. Was going to do mine this weekend but ended up stripping the front door, cutting and fitting beading to the outside around the windows (the inner beading is quite thick, on the outside someone had painted the glass to hide the inner bead!), and then stripped the surrounding frame and side window; followed by lots of sanding, filling, and tidying up prior to it's first coat of primer. The internal latch has had a couple of dunks of paint stripper, and will need one more to get the final layer of paint off and back to the original bare metal. Took me around 18 hours. my hands still ache although the painful burns (remember children, a heatgun on full is very very hot!) have settled now.

My door appears to have had a colourful history. On the outside under the white it's been dark grey, light blue, light green, and pink. The outside frame has been white, dark green, and yellow. The inside of the door has been orange and yellow. Either someone very colour blind used to live here, or it was psychedelic back in the 60s/70s.

@paulmc: I understand your pain mate :/ But you're doing a great job so far. Can't wait to see it painted!

@Talus: Looking really good bud. Really like the effect you have on the engines. They look just like they do on the show.
As for Galactica's nickname.. There were a few wasn't there? 'The Bucket' and 'The Big G' are a couple that come to mind.

@spack: Can't wait to see pic of the garage door. I'm sure it'll be best in show! :D

@everyone: Come on folks! See if we can get everyone entry in this month! :D

and the cookies go to cain!

Bucket and the Beast :P

of course between you and me, the way pegasus got messed up in ''captains hand'', i doubt it would have made it through to ''daybreak''. it just didnt seem capable of taking the same beating as Galactica, and the buckets had half its armor stripped!

anyway, nerd moment over

get those entries in people!

You beat me to it. Why not make the door your entry (no pun intended) this month Dan ;)

I actually might join in next month! Looking forward to seeing all this months entries up for voting. Good luck everyone.

There are two problems with me entering a door (there are two, garage and front door). (1) already passed entry date for this month, and (2) the front door is part primed and my wife will be painting it, and the garage door will be painted by all of us; so technically I won't be painting the doors myself.

Did another 3 hours solid paint stripping last night on the inside of the front door and frame. I reckon another 2 hours tonight and the stripping and sanding should be done. By then I'll be too tired and in too much pain to paint my entry tonight, so it's looking like tomorrow is the earliest I'll get started assuming I'm not starting on the garage door strip. Final entry is midnight on Thursday, so it looks like I'll be burning the just-before-midnight oil on Thursday to get my entry posted ...

Haven't got much choice. Spent this evening sanding and replacing window putty(the putty along the bottom of the side window next to the front door fell apart, it was badly cracked and probably has been there since the house was built in the 1930s), and my left hand is part numb and part feeling like it has pins and needles, my right hand is stiff, and both my index fingers hurt when I bend them. I think I've overdone it a bit over the past 4 days.

Your viper pic wasn't the cause, it was just a compounding factor. It was a rogue app on the server eating all the memory that killed the site :P There was barely enough left to allow the site to just about run, and then you uploaded your pic - final nail in the coffin!

For future reference, you can get Gimp (http://www.gimp.org , cross platform ) , Paint.Net (http://www.getpaint.net , Windows), or many other free photo editing apps (the two I've mentioned I've used, are very good, and give a Photoshop like experience without the wallet crunching price) to shrink the image down before uploading :D
