Drop zone Commander review.

Drop zone Commander review.

Postby KInG » Fri May 09, 2014 8:17 pm

I've just bought into another game; Drop zone commander. Which we all know is a worry because you never really know if the game is for you till you've tried it for real.

How I did is not really relevant to the topic but it explains my path into the dzc world. My friend cgra1 bought it himself hoping to attract some of our gaming group to it a little while back. But he buys a lot of games so when he said it was good I didn't really listen, as he always says that. Lol. He played it with his young son and bought 3 large armies of the four available. Quite an investment into a game for home I thought. But he was liking it so much it just pulled him in I guess without any real community to go with it. That made me think... Ouch.

So when we were talking the other day about the 40k rumours and predicting its future I asked if bolt action was his favourite game ATM. To my surprise he said no. DzC was his first choice. So we talked about it and he told me more about it. He told me what he had already, which amazed me, and so I promised to take a closer look at the game.

So I did what I did with BA, watched the demo game on beastofwar. I quickly realised though I had watched it before. This time though I was watching with a different outlook to the first time. The first time I was not looking for a potential new game. I was just browsing and seeing what other games were going on. But this time I watched more closely.

Having done that I then looked for other demos / battle reports. Watched the interviews with the creator and visited their website and started looking at the models.

Having done all that I thought it certainly was worth a closer look and arranged a demo game with Chris. We didn't get to play a lot of it coz that night he was called away, but I had seen enough and read enough if the rules to take a leap. Me and taumaul spotted a PHR army going cheap on eBay, and he'd had a couple of games with Chris also at this point. He also buys every game so was an easy sell and we bought the army deal.

Since then I've bought a load more models to expand my army and they are still to land. But since then I have read all the rules of my £13.50 rulebook which is full colour gloss and has all four army lists in there too.

I have been making lists with the army builder program Hawk Wargames have had made for their customers to use free (downloadable from their site). Along with everything else you would expect a gaming company of a competitive game to be doing:

A forum, with developers posting there answering and clarifying all the rules queries that come up. New units with PDFs on release date with experimental rules. Downloadable terrain to print and use on the boards. Terrain sets for a 6x4 table for £27 if you can't be arsed to print off or can't. And would like some glossy cardboard ones instead. Icons to print and use also. Errata that's up to date and current. And the list goes on.

By this time I was hooked. I am finally in a game that I feel is supported well, community listened to and everything works as intended. Happy days... So now can I please have my models wayland games!!!!

They are just as cheap on eBay guys so buy there if you think it will be quicker. :/

BDA is quite into DzC. I played a couple of games when it first came out and quite liked it but I felt there was some fat in the rules which could have been chopped out.

I've since got the Scourge starter set and then the 2=player start box game at Salute last year... but both are still unopened. I've just got too many games to play and only one evening a week to play them :(

Not sure I understand where the fat is. My rulebook is the 1.1 but as far as I know that only added an index, some errata, and a table it two.

The rules section of the book is small. I first thought how can it have the depth and complexity then? But it does. I found the rules to be quite concise. As I was reading them I was asking questions on their forum. I think I only needed to ask 3 or 4 things. In fact I've posted more answers to rules questions than asked them. Lol

Jay, DZC is actually 10mm, there's not much out there in that scale. Think he chose that size deliberately so as to prevent people from proxying.

Have to admit im interested, I wasnwhen I first heard of it about a year or so ago but didn't want to spend any money on it in case nobody else did. I might have to invest in the starter set as I like the look of the UCM.

I've bought from them through eBay a few times and they've delivered before the estimated delivery date-I think the power of feedback is a great motivator, as I've not yet experienced some of the delays others have had by going direct.

Back on topic-I've looked at DZC a couple of times, but with Malifaux and now X-Wing I cannot justify the expense of another game system (I have a wedding to pay for!).

Just get wed in the local registry office and take her down the pub for the reception, job done. ;). Then you can spend the spare cash on lots of nice shiny new models.

Sounds like you've been reading his notebook :P

Or sack the wedding. It's so old fashioned anyways. If your girl feels secure and loved then they won't worry about having one. Been with my other half 20yr now. She's never stressed over it once. ;)

Just do the other thing I used to do...

"Shall we get married this year or get that new kitchen you wanted" ... "Let's get the front block paved this year and redecorate the front room instead if tying the not, yeh?"

Before you know it the house is finished and you don't have a £15k bill hanging over ya. :D

I can't recomend Dropzone Commander highly enough. It's a great game, easy to learn, but complex enough to make it interesting.

Like has been said all units from all factions are in the rule book, so no codex creep. All new units have PDF rules free for download. There is an expansion book coming up, rumoured to be released August/September. It'll contain all the units that are currently PDF, and it will contain the new Resistance Faction.

The kits are amazingly detailed, and cast in very very high quality resin (nothing like GW failcast). Very little clean up is required.
I already have a sizeable UCM force. But I fully intend expanding into the PHR and possibly others. Or even the Fleet Commander, a space battle game being developed between Hawk and Andy Chambers.

@KiNG; what name do you go by on Hawk Forum? I've been on there a couple months now. I use same user name as I do here.
