I've just bought into another game; Drop zone commander. Which we all know is a worry because you never really know if the game is for you till you've tried it for real.
How I did is not really relevant to the topic but it explains my path into the dzc world. My friend cgra1 bought it himself hoping to attract some of our gaming group to it a little while back. But he buys a lot of games so when he said it was good I didn't really listen, as he always says that. Lol. He played it with his young son and bought 3 large armies of the four available. Quite an investment into a game for home I thought. But he was liking it so much it just pulled him in I guess without any real community to go with it. That made me think... Ouch.
So when we were talking the other day about the
40k rumours and predicting its future I asked if bolt action was his favourite game ATM. To my surprise he said no. DzC was his first choice. So we talked about it and he told me more about it. He told me what he had already, which amazed me, and so I promised to take a closer look at the game.
So I did what I did with
BA, watched the demo game on beastofwar. I quickly realised though I had watched it before. This time though I was watching with a different outlook to the first time. The first time I was not looking for a potential new game. I was just browsing and seeing what other games were going on. But this time I watched more closely.
Having done that I then looked for other demos / battle reports. Watched the interviews with the creator and visited their website and started looking at the models.
Having done all that I thought it certainly was worth a closer look and arranged a demo game with Chris. We didn't get to play a lot of it coz that night he was called away, but I had seen enough and read enough if the rules to take a leap. Me and taumaul spotted a PHR army going cheap on eBay, and he'd had a couple of games with Chris also at this point. He also buys every game so was an easy sell and we bought the army deal.
Since then I've bought a load more models to expand my army and they are still to land. But since then I have read all the rules of my £13.50 rulebook which is full colour gloss and has all four army lists in there too.
I have been making lists with the army builder program Hawk Wargames have had made for their customers to use free (downloadable from their site). Along with everything else you would expect a gaming company of a competitive game to be doing:
A forum, with developers posting there answering and clarifying all the rules queries that come up. New units with
PDFs on release date with experimental rules. Downloadable terrain to print and use on the boards. Terrain sets for a 6x4 table for £27 if you can't be arsed to print off or can't. And would like some glossy cardboard ones instead. Icons to print and use also. Errata that's up to date and current. And the list goes on.
By this time I was hooked. I am finally in a game that I feel is supported well, community listened to and everything works as intended. Happy days... So now can I please have my models wayland games!!!!
They are just as cheap on eBay guys so buy there if you think it will be quicker. :/
