Free WD Minis - Painting Comp (out of comp discussion)

Postby LordMalekTheRedKnight » Sat Aug 30, 2008 8:25 pm

Hey all :)

ive just picked up my copy of the latest WD, along with the 2 free snapfit AoBR minis: SM Termi and Ork Nob.

seeing as a lot of us will be getting these (either free with WD, as part of the AoBR set, or 2nd hand once people start splitting up the boxed set) i was wondering whether anyone was interested in using them to have a little painting competition (similar to the Objective Marker comp)?

i was thinking we could enter one or both models each, with the top 3 entries of each model being chosen (personally i have no interest in painting the Nob, but i didnt think that should stop anyone else doing theirs). besides prehaps adding chapter/klan specific iconograhpy, i dont think the models should be extensively converted - this should be more about painting (where as the Objective Marker comp is about painting and converting/scratchbuilding, and design). winners could be voted for based on colourscheme, execution and overall look, etc.

i know the Objective comp will be keeping us busy, and we all already have plenty of painting to do, so i was thinking of having a rather distant entry deadline (especially considering this issue of WD has been delayed, and some people are waiting for AoBR etc) - a couple of months, or maybe more.

you could use the mini as a test piece before starting a new army, as a chance to paint a model from a Klan/Chapter that you dont intend to collect a full army of, or just to practice a new technique/colour pallete.

personally i think it would be a lot of fun, and a good opportunity for us to compete all using the same model(s).

so, what are your thoughts? would you be up for something like this? :?:

cheers :)

~ Tim
p.s. incidentally, i am looking to sell or trade my Ork Nob (still on sprue) - if anyone is interested, drop me a PM ;)

Anyone who is interested can jump in over there to "get their feet wet" before the competition here is finalized.

To anyone who chooses to enter, Good luck and keep us posted on your progress.

Sounds like a good idea.
Maybe run it as the next competition after your current one.?

Though I won't enter as I've go so much stuff sitting around, it'll probably be somewhere around 2010 before my terminator gets painted 8O

I'm looking to get shot my ork as well. :D

Sounds good to me. Would the comp be to paint both or just one. Would there be one prize for the ork and one for the termie? Would there be a fixed colour scheme or leave it up to the painter?

I'd suggest no conversions or fancy bases - just a simple paint job on the free plastic mini straight out the box...?

mattjgilbert wrote:Would the comp be to paint both or just one.

i would suggest running 2 simultaneous comps (or "2 categories"), one for each. that way if you want to paint both you can paint both, and if not, you can choose which one to paint.

mattjgilbert wrote:Would there be one prize for the ork and one for the termie?

i think it would be a bit unreasonable to try and compare an Ork to a Termi, so i would prefer winners in each. it would also defeat the point in us all painting the same model otherwise, too.

mattjgilbert wrote:Would there be a fixed colour scheme or leave it up to the painter?

personally i would say leave it up to each entrant (like the Objective comp). that way we dont have to decide on a single scheme for everyone, and no-one ends up wasting a model that they could otherwise have chosen to make match their army.

mattjgilbert wrote:I'd suggest no conversions or fancy bases - just a simple paint job on the free plastic mini straight out the box...?

agreed, except i think we should allow chapter/klan iconography (for the same reason as above - no point in wasting a model because it doesnt match the rest of your army and ends up looking out of place). just something small though (a wolf tail on the stormbolter grip, a little icon on the back of the power fist, a glyph on the shoulder pad etc), and only if the entrant wants it. in the same vein, people should feel free to use any transfers they want, even those that dont come with AoBR.

thoughts?

Works for me too. I don't subscribe to WD though, and was undecided on the AoBR set. Now I guess I'll have to take the plunge! The ideas you have for the comp sound good so far. Keeps it simple and on the same playing field but allows freedom in color scheme.
Count me in (after I get the minis that is.)
You'll have to post which termie and which nob it is from WD so they can be seperated from the models that come in the AoBR set.

Well if ppl are up for it then, I could run it straight after the first objective marker, then continue with the next objective marker?

I think having the two comps going on would be a bit much considering we all do have lots in the pipeline :D

i wasnt intending for it to replace the Objective Comp, even temporarily. at the same time however i didnt want to have to hold onto the model for 7 months while we wait for the first series of Objectives to be completed.
i was hoping it could run at the same time, but over a longer period, to give everyone time to do both, without disrupting the already ongoing Objective comp series.

its only 1 (or 2) models, and i suspect a lot of us will only be painting them to tabletop standard (or just above) - we arent all going to enter them for Golden Daemon next year. :P

2-3 months should be plenty of time to get an entry ready, even with 1 Objective Marker a month on top (its only a bog-standard snap-fit plastic Termi and/or Nob afterall, not a multi-part metal Special Character). its meant to be fun - not too much like hard work. ;)

make sense? :)

When does the WD with the minis come out? For those who can't or don't get the magazine, the only alternative is the AoBR boxed set or waiting for the individual models to come out on a bits site.
To run a concurrent competition is okay with me. If it's going to run over a 2-3 month period, why not start it on the ist day of autumn and end it on the ist day of winter?
We could even call it "The Fall of Black Reach Contest"

I can say the Battlebunker in Chicago had copies of the new WD also. I happen to have just got mine in the mail this last week though.

they've got the WD in my local GW and my local indie, plus the GW has a whole wall of AoBR boxes (assumed they were on sale, might have been mistaken though). they also had the set painted up for intro games, and the minis looked great (they gave them a Blood Ravens scheme, IIRC). 8)

ive still not decided on which scheme im going to use for mine: my Fists of Wrath or my Sons of Mars (AdMech marines)... probably the former, as the SoM scheme usually depends on the model having robes (DA Vets) for one of the main colours... and the Termi does have a Power Fist (iconic weapon of the FoW). ;)

We could even call it "The Fall of Black Reach Contest"

checks callendar... so thats 22nd Sept to 21st Dec, right?

only issues i could see with that:
- would anyone mind holding off on painting their new model until then, or would they rather start sooner?
- would everyone be here at the end date, or would people be on hols etc? would this prevent us determining the winner before Xmas (would be a very short voting window at a busy time of year)?
- wouldnt we want to do something special for Xmas as well?

thoughts?

cheers :)
