Could I recommed the email to read:

"Dear Joe,

Screw you and your evil empire.

Love and kisses,

Matt"

Skive dude.

Everybody from a shelf stacker to a trauma nurse deserves some unofficial redressing of the wage effort bargain now and again.

No, because I'd have to take the entire week off to change my sleep pattern, and I also cannot afford to take any time off sick at all. Ever.

We get the next years holiday forms about a month before the new holiday year starts. Unless you fill it in and hand in immediately you are quite likely to not get what you want. Yes, the company wants all your holiday filled in for the next year if possible. There a certain days everyone wants, and the company also allocates certain holiday hour limits to certain weeks (which makes no sense when combined with each departments staff levels). for example, the weekend picked for the meetup happens to have a 30 hour limit set. (i know, i tried to book it a couple of months ago). yes, thats 30 hours for one week shared between 20+ staff. As everyone has different shifts and hours, it can be difficult to actually get your entire shift off, let alone an entire shift on a week you actually want...
They also wouldn't allow anyone to book christmas day off this early in the holiday year. Except the store will be shut and there is no work whatsoever, so everyone has to take the day off......
Last easter I was refused the day off holiday (the store being shut and no work at all) Reason? the department had overbooked it's holiday allocation that week. So the company would prefer i took another day off, having to get someone in on overtime at additional expense to cover me rather than take a budgeted for days holiday on a day where it won't impact anything and cost the least.
This is the sort of stupidity I have to work with.

IIRC sainsbury's , v different to tescos, who have a "use up your holiday by X date" and a bum rush of no staff being around those 2 weeks when they clear it.(like most other places)

Yes, sainsburys. I agree with the first come first served policy (and yes we do have staff who hand the form back within minutes of getting it to try and get certain weeks / days) the first week in august is a good example.
I don't agree with the artificial limit imposed within departments each week. If we have the staff to cover it, why shouldn't people take holiday? Each department has a holiday diary, and a holiday schedule on the computer. Management look in the diary and schedule, determine if you can have to holiday according to staff levels, sign the form (but only a department manager, not his cronies can do this) and this form gets handed to HR. In HR it joins a pile that gets done when the person responsible is next in. They then decide if you can have it based on the store allocation that week, including if we are over budgeted etc. They then input it onto their separate schedules. You then get a new copy of the form with the booked holiday on it back. However this can take a couple of weeks, forms frequently get lost, the only staff who can sign / authorise it can themselves be on holiday etc. You frequently get forms back that authorise only part of your holiday request (leaving days out in the middle etc) with no explanation. So you have to find out yourself, then get it cancelled (by the manager signing the form which has to go to HR.....etc etc etc).
I've also been rung up by HR on 3 separate occasions asking me where I was and why I hadn't been in work. I've then had to politely inform them that I'm on holiday and could they sod off and let me enjoy it.
I could understand difficulties getting cover etc if you are a high up essential part of the business, but I'm just a faceless lowest wage peon!
Honestly the worst holiday system I've ever encountered (including GW where I didn't get any holiday...)
