My wife works for Tesco, holiday handling is a nightmare there too. More than once she's been asked why she wasn't at work the previous day by her manager even though that same manager had signed off the holiday request and had marked it on the calendar. A single day off sick results in a disciplinary interview too.

What? Surely that's illegal?

Wow!

I just take holiday when I feel like/ when deadlines allow. I've been known to call in in the morning & say I'm not in 'cos I've decided to take a day off on holiday when I'm quiet.

That said, I'm rarely quiet, I've managed to take 11 of my 23 days holiday in the last 12 months (and I can only carry 5 forward) FML!

You can't discipline someone for being sick!
Only if as a result they failed to follow any procedure for supplying a doctor’s note or calling in to update their line manager as per their contract.

I can't see how you can complain about things like this.

Gran Bretan doesn't make or do anything anymore, so how are the wonkers supposed to justify their wage?
Why not fill your wonk time with petty beurocracy/annoying proceedure?
Increase paperwork everywhere, I say more speed cameras!

If you know your arse from your elbow, you shouldn't be wonking.

As for sick people and work, its ridiculous.
Sick people are innefficient and should be re-educated to not be ill.
If you are ever going to be ill in your entire lifetime, you should not be allowed to wonk.

Why oh why oh why don't they make healthy people always walk uphills as this will make them fitter and make unhealthy ones go down (by whatever means is available to them, such as crawling/rolling) so as to improve their performance???

You petty-minded bunch of wonkers.

Why oh why oh why, don't you take time to think, rather than just writing made up nonsense that wastes everybodies time???

It's not a "proper" disciplinary interview (I shouldn't have used that term as it's a specific name for a job related procedure), I think they call it a "return to work interview", but she's said it's like being interrogated by the Gestapo having to explain exactly why you were off, even though the few times she has been off ill she's rung in before her shift starts to let her manager know (and she doesn't take off days sick for anything that isn't serious, the few she's had she's been in a really bad way). I guess they do it to try to weed out the habitual skivers, but then again they end up having experienced staff quit due to being treated like crap so at the end of the day they're wasting time and money on having to train new staff.

Tescos is openly weaselly BUT openly recognises union intereference, so when they try to change shift and hours and timing all in one retrospectively applied document to make people work sunday evenings.. everyone just points out what they've done is illegal, and they obey the law and back down from whichever local managers pet project it was (and they frequently rotate fast enough to not be able to be vindictive about it).
I have several friends working for the big beast and basically it comes down to being stubborn knowing whose doing what and your life is ok... what angelwing has to go through is just complete crap..(speaking as someone who has an HR degree)
Barely even lurking..

Oh yes they can.
It works like this: its after a certain amount of periods of absence (regardless of reason) that you get the first disciplinary interview. next period of absence gets the next level of warning etc.
Your manager is supposed to take circumstances into consideration ( eg I broke both my legs thats why I haven't been into work etc) but they can mark it down in your file. too many and the company will reach a point were they can warn you with letters and fire you, all because you were off sick legitimately. The way they see it you are unreliable because of your wobbly health and they don't want you.
doctors notes don't mean squat. The period of absence is still noted and still counts towards the total even if it was genuine (and even very serious).

A company I used to work for deliberately failed one guys starter probation even though he was a hard worker and very good. Reason was his daughter also worked there and he was the driver and they lived far away. Thing is, his daughter has just announced she was pregnant. The company simply didn't want to provide the chair she would need (the job was standing up for 10 hours at a production line) and pay maternity leave. They legitimately sacked the dad so they couldn't be called into question of his daughter 'failing' her probation on the suspicion it was because she was pregnant. No dad giving lifts, meant the daughter handed in her notice.

Another trick companies use is this. A number of years ago I was off with a legitimate illness, and I had a sick note from the Dr. After 2 weeks I received a letter from the company I worked for telling me to go see the company GP. I mean, what is he going to say? He can not by law over rule what my GP said...

Anywho, off topic, lol. Really wish I was able to go (Can't get time off from my wife, lol) But have fun guys and gals. And I hope to see y'all in spring.
