Next Event?

Postby KInG » Wed Aug 13, 2008 9:06 am

As we left the AoS Roadtrip the other day, we were all talking about the next opportunity for us all to meet up. The GT heat 3 was mentioned and we are still looking forward to that (tickets already paid for), but I just remembered there's the UK Gamesday 08 in September.

At GamingFigures have a thread going which has some interest from members to attend this event. I thought the members here might wanna arrange something also.

Last time we met up we had a brief meeting in the main hall. Gamesday wouldn't be the social event the Roadtrip was, but at least it would give us a chance to see what everyone was up to and buying into?

Our lot can make most things at fairly short notice, but we're reluctant to part with cash unnecessarily (we are the tight lot).
Warseer had a thread recently about *some* gamesdays closing (to which most people called shenanigans because of quite how much money they take just on the door (they quickly added it up and everyone went "wow!") let alone sales) I don't buy, and I don't like getting squashed by sweaty kids with the ikea must-have+elbows attitude (like the plebs at ikea or the old ladies at the discount meats rack in supermarkets  ) There did seem to be some truth to the push to actually try a bit to actually set up proper stalls at more generic cons in the thread.

I'm currently seeing if I can
A) find out which Heat ljundhammer is attending
B) get the smurf codex early through sources
C) as a fallback porting that list you played into black templars with only a small loss.
If I can get that all done I'll try to meet you all at heat 3..I might let you have a chance
As for other events- Ben has said he'll fly across the big pond of doom at some point this year, might be nice if those who don't have to commute more than a hour or two turned up then.

I'm probably going to have to skip Games Day as it's my daughter's birthday. As to the GT, it will depend on the dates; I'm working in Barcelona the first 2 weekends in Nov, then it's my birthday, then my son's, then I'm away the weekend after that. Doesn't leave a lot of time, but I'll see what I can do.

As to meeting up with Ben, there was a suggestion from Tim that we meet up in Bristol. If that does happen, I can probably chat to Socaddict about meeting up at the club there for games.

Chroal and I have tickets for Gamesday 08 and will probably be staying in and around Birmingham that weekend, it would be good to meet up with anyone who is around! :)

As for the GT, I'm quite interested in this but can't seem to find basic information such as how many heats you have to attend and thinks like if you have to paint your own army etc. Can anyone enlighten me?

Tourney?

Postby Herne » Wed Aug 13, 2008 10:01 am

Chatting to Emperor last night. Perhaps an idea for the next AOS event could be an in-house tournament. We could all pile up to WHW as recently, but play a tournament between those willing to enter. This might depend on a couple of factors -

A) We were all pretty friendly with good attitudes about rules discrepancies, could we remain so under a tournament standing? :?:

B) People would need to commit to playng at least all day sat and sunday morning - I know for some people giving up the whole weekend was an issue.

C) Could we all stand the pressure!!!!!

Any thoughts?

It will turn up around here soon
http://uk.games-workshop.com/tournaments/
If you can find the last years pack it will help fill you in..let me have a dig around for a mo (or see if someone else does first)
the main thing is to keep an eye on their FAQ- it changes very frequently (last year it changed twice in one day...and it eventually crippled all the folks planning on taking drop guard e.g. Ljundhammer, who then had to quickly make a new list)
The faq normally pops up here
http://warhammerworld.typepad.com/

EDIT I've sent the rulespack for entry and format for the 07 year one to spack to see if IMF can have a read and if its any use to prepare for what this years may be like.

I think I'm going to Heat 3. My brother's got my ticket (apparently) so I'll find out this weekend...

Gamesday is too crowded for us, but...

- we are waiting for further details from Ben to arrange seeing him when he comes over later this year. Kate has no holiday allowance left for this year, so it would have to be somewhere where we can travel to and from in the same day (or maybe stay overnight if she happened to have 2 days off in a row). Bristol would probably be good for us (we have friends there we need to visit anyway), and i think its close enough for Dan & Angelwing too. of course, if we cant arrange a group meet somewhere like that, then Ben may as well come to Swansea, if he can.

- we are hoping to pop in and see Dan & his lot in January on our way to and/or from staying in Lincolnshire (near Peterborough). will depend on when Kate can get holidays, and what weekends Dan is free etc. we might try to travel there on the sunday morning (for games club), and then back afterwards/stay just Sunday night, to cut down on hotel costs.

- we will also be playing in GW Peterborough (hopefully Jan) and GW Cardiff (pretty much whenever, as long as Kate has the day off).

- we would love to make the WHW meetup an annual thing (any more regular and it would get too expensive). same time next year, guys? :D

cheers

~ Tim

thy that for some info IMF. No u can have ur army painted by someone else and only one heat is required - which gets u to the final if you finish high enuff in ur heat.

I play the same way in my tourney games as i did at AoS. But, that said, I think there are plenty of tourneys on the go now and would rather see AoS remain a social gathering instead.

If we did do a tourney, I'd like to see it very tongue in cheek with bonus points awarded for most beardy army etc and the overall winner obliged to buy a round of drinks.
Basically played strictly for laughs.
I would be tempted to field a close combat witch hunters army with loads of arco flagellents, repentia and zealots, combined with an allied damonhunter inquisitor and his daemonhosts!

Everyone, I appreciate the effort to include me in the meet up. As I said, as soon as we get my wife's passport we can begin discussing dates.

Note to everyone: Sometimes it does pay off to get those more expensive refundable tickets. ;)

Well to encourage those who don't want to play tourney we could have a panel of the wise and just (like chuck norris in dodgeball) and for each beard\ for each weasel for each advantage swiped which made an oppoennt raise and eyebrow, but the eyebrow was not read... The arbiters of justice and gameage penalise the beard a pint to the opposition. So anyone actually coming first is irrelevant. Whoever came drunkest is the nicest opponent..and unlike normal meets you actually have everyone queueing to play the beardy player to A) break his bank B) get drunk.
That said I could do either- more structured, or same again is fine by me. Our lot can easily do before next year as commute and residence is in the bag due to our ninja location skills.

Thanks King, I've already scoured that site but couldn't find answers to the questions above! :) Why is everyone going for Heat 3 in particular? Is it the only one with places left or is there some special reason?

Kings lot have their tickets and know, Ljundhammer and his crew from down south *appear* to be going then. And I think I'm hyping it up just because its alot better to go with a crew (although if I can't get an army out and painted within the next few weeks I may not)- you can play against complete &$&^%s (a bit of a rarity and most folks there know which ones they are) and its always best to have some friendly faces around to calm you down and keep it all in perspective when something like that happens.
E.g. if you go to the events forum of warseer and have a look around last years batreps-sometimes the judges will make calls that just make you wish to lose it; one guy had a judge say that tank shock pushed his monstrous creatures *off the table*- so he just faced a stone wall of opponent and judge saying his models got away from objectives and X "s away 1) you'd be wanting to be able to laugh rather than punch 2) you'd need some extreme chill out time afterwards... and even if everything goes right- its always nicer playing with folks you know. So no.. nothing special just mob mentality I reckon.
