New Forum - FoW

New Forum - FoW

Postby KInG » Thu Dec 31, 2009 12:41 pm

We have now added a forum for any FoW gamers who frequent our humble home.

I'm not sure any of a regular members play this game, but its one our little group has just picked up, and we are finding it highly entertaining. Infact none of us have played a 40k game since November.

I just recently invested in the US Boxset - Army deal - 2nd/3rd Armoured Company. And I'll be posting my WIP very soon.

The thing I like about this game is:

1. The scale (15mm) - The game is played on the same sized table as 40k (6x4), but because of the scale, you are actually playing on a battlefield twice the size. This allows for alot more of a tactical game.

2. The rules - well written and not alot of scope for misinturpritation. We are still learning, so I reserve the right to retract this statement later if we find out later there are areas of greyness ;)

3. Models - These are great models for their size. Easy to put together, and when people talk about resin and metal, I think of flash! and I don't mean Gordon. But there's not alot of it :) Not like FW and GW metal, so they are easy to put together, sometimes just 3 parts to a tank. I admit, if your a modelling/converting freak, this isn't good news; but a Sherman tank is a Sherman tank at the end of the day.

4. Price - An army of 1500 points will cost you approx £140.00 (10% less from AoS shop). This is about 1/2 the price of a 40k 1500 point army. And 1500 points is the size of a standard army on FoW also for a game that lasts 2-3 hours.

5. Like 40K - I personanlly like the fact that the game shares alot of simillarities with 40K. Terrain and LOS is almost same as old 4th ed 40K. But there is lots of stuff that is beter. Just the simplicity of the game is its greatest asscet - that's once you've learnt the modifiers. But i recal taking along time learning those for 40K also.

6. Historical Backgound - the fluff is there, burnt into hitory. And I now have, in just a short time, a much greater apreciation of what our forefathers actually did for us. Also, how that translates into the game, army traits etc, is very good also.

7. The terrain - you can buy premade and painted terrain at very reasonable prices. So, instantly, your boards look great, more detailed, and you are instantly transported to the hedge lined fields of Normandy, France or the beaches, etc.

I'm sure there is more, but this was just what I could think of off the top of my head. If you guys are thinking about this game, then please feel free to call me or Gavin at the shop, or email us on orders@gamingfigures.com... or just pm us here. We'll only be too glad to talk about the game with you guys. :D

Checkout my coming blog for the US, and I'll try and get Gav to post his Germans which he's well on with the painting of also.

Meanwhile, all the very best for the NY, hope you all have a great time tonight, and I'll see most of you at the NY at the AoS Feb '10 meetup, looking forward to that.... btw will they let us play FoW at WHW :D lmao

What bits you have so far Jim?

There's a good little starter bundle, under priced, with a mini rulebook, that get's you started, and is a good intro to the game... Open Fire... or do you have that already?

All this talk of Flames of War peeked my interest, so while browsing 'Orcs Nest' in London I saw 'Open Fire' for £23 and picked it up.

Great little pack - 2 Stugs, 3 Sherman Tanks and a mini rule book.
Still reading through the booklet - just wish it included a starter Briefing instead of having to buy a separate Campaign Book, though there is a few free PDFs on their website.

Now what do I go for Germans or Americans?

lol whats wrong with british ;)

I would advising reading the Army Special rules and fluff. That helped me decide. But, do u get those in the mini RB?

Actually they are in the pdfs on their site which I'm going to add to the forum... they are called: Know Your Enemy and are the special army rules/traits; the full arsenel of that army's wepaons, (including stats); and that army's special characters/warriors.

Should be up real soon, watch for a sticky in this forum.

The nice thing about FOW is that all sides are balanced. Now there may be some force selections that may get stuffed by other force selections but thats why you have nalanced forces. Pick what you want.
