New "open Fire" Box set

New "open Fire" Box set

Postby berger15 » Sat Dec 01, 2012 4:03 pm

Hi all,

Just got the "Open Fire" starter box set, as I thought it would be a great way to increase my German forces. I am mightily impressed! The set is well laid out within the box, so there seems to be little chance of damage. The starter rules are pretty clear to get you going, the two armies look heavily weighted in favour of the allies until you realise how differently they play and the 2d card terrain at least adds variation to early gamers before they start making their own, or buying scenery (GW take note!). And all for £45 on here!

My only gripe (and it's a small one) - at 15mm it is pretty hard to tell the German infantry from the British infantry when they are all on the same sprues, in the same grey plastic. It might have been nice to have them on their own sprues or more clearly marked. But this is probably just a product of my aging eyes!

Am I the only person impressed by this?

I picked this set up as well. Playing World of Tanks has rekindled my interest in WWII games.
Incredible set for the price.
You get 8 allied tanks, 3 german tanks, 2 german anti-tank guns and a hundred odd figures and bases.
Plus you get a mini rule book, a quick start guide, dossier sheets, dice and cardboard terrain.
More than enough to get you stated in the game.
Now I have to learn how to paint ultra tiny soldiers!

If you have any interest in the game at all or want to add to your forces, this box set is highly recommended.

Now, anyone want to buy a ton of 40K stuff? ;)

What scale are they?

I did a ton (read thousands) of 15mm napoleonics, just blocked out colours + details (belts etc) and they look good en masse (hey, Naploleonic speak), only to stop in my tracks.
Out of interest, I ordered a few pre-painted ones to see what they were like (not really, I wanted some highlanders and was terrified of fluffing up tartan).

This sounds like a piss-take, but they were painted in the "toy soldier" style. 8O
I copied how it was done and got similar results = about 200x better than the thousands I had done, for about +5% effort = I threw my arms up in disgust (now have far better digestion) and gave up.

The flames of war minis are the same scale as the napoleonics, 15mm.

And....thousands of napoleonic 15mm miniatures?! Cleaned of flash and painted??

That explains quite a lot Ruffian! Quite a lot indeed!! :)

That's more than enough to drive any man quite mad!

And I'll probably do the same, block out some colors and just do a simple wash. I'll post up some pics as I progress.

Right now the biggest challenge is assembling the 3 inch long tanks. I haven't had to use a pair of tweezers to build a model in quite some time!

The box set is an absolute bargain and the miniatures are very nice.

I bought it and I already owned more armour than Hitler had available at anyone time during WW2. :)

I love the idea of the 2D terrain as well. Ok, its not used by veteran gamers (mine is still in the box), but a great idea for beginners.

Word of warning guys the Shermans need to have part of their tracks removed to fit together correctly. I recommend you follow the assembly and painting instructions on the Flames Of War site.

Yeah the flames of war site has a lot of info, and looking through it heled me in assembling all the vehicles as well as the anti-tank gun.

Here's the link to the site.
