jlong05's Blog Update (Red Dragon Contest)

Postby jlong05 » Tue Feb 10, 2009 11:57 pm

Hey everyone. I know we get very little LotR content here, but I am going to the GT locally for it here in AZ and as such have also started work on my painting competition entry. I would appreciate any feedback from all you seasoned painters. Feel free to comment here or on my Blog.

Cause I like trees. ;)

Seriously, Red Dragon is the contests name, like Grand Daemon. It is funny though. I had thought about getting the dragon model and doing it for the competition, but then felt I better not as I didn't have an army that could easily use the dragon. Ents are cheap enough that I can ally them in if needed.

It needs some foliage or moss or something. And don't forget the GWHobby rule, the base needs little toadstools on it...

Some lichen/moss painted on the model would look good. All on the one side would look good (unless it's a myth that moss only grows on the north face of trees!)

Agree with the need to add foliage too.

Great comments from everyone. I actually worked some more last evening and added some painted leaves and also gave another highlight color to the bark.

I plan this evening to add the grey (old bark) areas and the highlight to the leaves. Also this may be the opportunity to add a moss/lichen effect.

I have also been playing with the idea of using the woodland scenics tree material to give the foliage more definition. What do you wall this about doing that on a model?

Your blog wanted me to have a google id or an openid from a provider I'm not signed up with so...

Yeah, sorry about the id thing. It helps prevent span by forcing the user id and not allowing the anon posts.

Thanks. I do think the moss/lichen came out well. The effect is subtle which is what I wanted. I just wish I could figure out something 'extra' for the base. I had thought about more of an overgrown area, like Fangorn Forest, but didn't like the way it was detracting from the model itself.

Oh well. I will probably revisit it maybe later. I still need to get the display base done and it isn't even started yet.

Maybe some actual twigs painted up to make it look like he's walking through a wooded area?

looks amazing, mate! :D

only point i would raise, is that the glue that is holding the right hand side piece of scrub to the base is visible, looking white and milky. i think you might need to paint over it (unless it has since dried clear).

hope that helps :)
