Need help with my Scarecrow Deck

Postby LordMalekTheRedKnight » Tue Jan 27, 2009 3:48 pm

Hey all :)

a couple of weeks ago Kate and I opened a Reaper King during a game of Shadowmoor Packwars.

this is our first "gold" card, and it got me thinking...

ordinarily we use mono-color decks, but when we play Packwars we use all 5 colors in our mini decks. Reaper King works best with all 5 types of Land, and with lots of Scarecrows. since Scarecrows are Artifact Creatures they are colourless, they dont care what kind of Lands you have in play. this would mean that if i took just Scarecrows for my Creatures, then as far as they are concerned, i could play a 5-color deck that would behave exactly as if it was mono-color. :D

we are still in the middle of playing furher games of Packwars, so i dont know what other cards we are about to open. however, in the meanwhile ive started a rough draft of a Scarecrow deck list:

Image

as you can see, we have 20 Scarecrows so far (with 4 more boosters to open), including 1 Reaper King.

to flesh out the deck i need to add 10-15 other cards (ive made a start, see above). and this is where you all come in. :)

some 'rules' for the deck:
- we arent going to buy any new cards - we have to use what we already have (if you suggest something we dont have, i can try and find the closest available match)
- i dont want any creatures that arent Scarecrows in the deck.
- the other cards can be any color (inc. colorless), but i would prefer to keep the fixed color costs of those cards down - ideally needing just 1 mana of a particular color to cast a spell (i might be able to make an exception for some cards, going up to 2 of a particular color)

the deck quite clearly revolves around having Reaper King in play. unfortunately, we only have 1 copy of that card. i think therefore that rest of the deck's cards concentrates on finding, preserving and using Reaper King. for example:
- Commune with Nature allows me to pick a creature from my next 5 cards, for just 1 Green mana
- Mine Excavation allows me to return an Artifact from my graveyard to my hand

i was considering adding some spells that help me draw/order cards, like:
- Telling Time (Blue)
- Snakeform (Blue/Green)
- Index (Blue)
- Idle Thoughts (Blue)
- Counsel of the Soratami (Blue)
- Phyrexian Vault (Colorless)
- Viridescent Wisps (Green)
- Crimson Wisps (Red)
- Cerulean Wisps (Blue)
- Diabolic Tutor (Black)*

*this card's cost includes 2 Black mana, but it essentially acts as an extra copy of Reaper King in my Library - so i think i can make an exception.

ive also considered adding the following cards:

- Remove Soul (Blue)
- Unsummon (Blue)
- Threaten (Red)
- Incinerate (Red)
- Terror (Black)

so, what do you think? :?:

cheers in advance,

~ Tim
p.s. as soon as we open any other cards that might be useful here, i will add them to this post. :)

I also plan to make a Scarecrow deck at some time, and it seems that many of them rely upon having different coloured creatures in play. There are two main ways I am looking to do this. First, include 4 of the scarecrow that can change colours *the name eludes me). The other way is to use Changelings in the deck since they count as every creature type, including Scarecrow, . . .and Dragon, Elf, Sheep, Goat, etc.

well Reaper King can benefit from all of their abilities (while they all benefit from his). i also put the "wisps" cards we have on my shortlist above (they would allow temporary access to color dependant bonuses, as well as helping me draw cards).

even without these abilities though i still think they are decent enough cards. :)

what do you think? :?:

cheers
