"Overgrown" Green Deck (60-card custom)

Postby LordMalekTheRedKnight » Sat Jan 24, 2009 8:38 pm

Hey all :)

after i had the absolute pleasure of playing Dan & Co. at Birmingham last weekend (cheers guys - i had a blast! :D), i decided to try my hand at making some themed 60 card decks from our collection (they all use 60 card decks, and ive now got plenty of Lands thanks to Slate's generous donation).

first up is a Green deck (ive used cards from my ~100 card Green deck, the Green 10th ed Themedeck, and the boosters we have opened recently) - "Overgrown".

the idea was to get as lots of Forests into play as fast as possible and to generate lots of Mana. this would allow me to play lots of big creatures (inc. a very powerful Molimo), and get big bonuses from things like Blanchwood Armor.

as a result, the only creatures that went into the deck were the aforementioned big guys, and those that find Lands/generate Mana.
the one exception was the Hoof Skulkin (who was my 60th card):
- he would allow me to block creatures with Fear
- he can use my large mana reserves to boost my creatures (once ive paid for all my creatures he will give me something to use my Lands for)

Blanchwood Armor is there to make my big creatures even bigger (due to all those Forests), combined with a full compliment of Rampant Growth, and the recommended Lands-to-cards ratio. Dramatic Entrance should help me get a big expensive creature into play even sooner than normal.

on the whole the plan is to ignore Flyers, but incase i come up against any particularly nasty ones, ive taken Raking Canopy and Hurricane (which could also come in handy for finishing off an opponent if i get a Life point advantage) - no flying creatures of my own, and not even any with Reach, as those didnt fit the criteria for this deck.

Helix Pinnacle gives me another way to win, making the most of all that Mana i hope to be generating.

Overrun was my favourite card from the 10th ed Green Themedeck - drawing it often won me the game, and with all these massive creatures it should be even more decisive (half a dozen 10/10's with Trample - and thats without Blanchwood Armour!).

anyway, thats the reasoning behind what went into the deck. here's the list:

this is my first attempt at building a more "focused" deck, limited to just 60 cards and with a distinct theme. so, what do you think? :?:

cheers in advance :)

~ Tim
p.s. i will be using this deck tonight against Kate (not sure yet what deck she will be using) - i will let you know how it goes!

Hmmm, how do you block flyers with this deck?

And with the theme and method, 4 Giant Growths, grossly under rated card.

My biggest fear would be being overrun early by a weenie deck.

err i dont. ;)

the idea is to have such big threats on my side of the table that if any flyers do attack i do more damage in return. and if a flyer decides to stay home and block me, it dies just like anything else. :P

Raking Canopy should help (once in play it effectively makes me immune to flyers up to Toughness 4), and Hurricane can clear out whole swathes of flyers (with no real Toughness limit), ready for my creatures to attack.

unfortunately we only have 1. :(

same goes for Overrun (imagine 4 of those in this deck?!).

we've not yet started buying specific cards to add to our decks (just not how we are doing things), but i would like some Overgrowthsin this deck too, if i had them.

well i do have some smaller creatures (5 to be exact), and accellerated mana generating/Land playing means i can get the big ones out quite soon too (i had a turn 5 Enormous Baloth in play last night!).

one thing i had been worried about was having to discard too many good cards at the ends of my turns because i couldnt afford to play them. in practice this wasnt really an issue, as there are so many big creatures in the deck i could afford to lose a few this way early on without it really affecting me. and once i could generate 7 mana a turn, i could play anything i drew anyway.

last night i used this deck against Kate who used our Black deck (based on the 10th ed Themedeck with another 50 cards added from boosters etc). it performed quite well, doing exactly what it was supposed to do. next time, i'd like to try it against either her Blue or her White decks, as they contain many more flyers (will be able to put my plan to the test).

cheers for the comments :)

Flyers are pretty dangerous, especially non tapping ones like Serra Angels.

Giant Growth is a common, I might be able to find you a few from earlier editions if your interested.

One of the things to remember is a green fast mana weenie deck can kill you on turn 5, that hurts.
