Space Hulk from Source Forge

Postby LordMalekTheRedKnight » Wed Mar 12, 2008 6:03 pm

(Spack: split from Space Hulk / Teardown topic in News & Rumours)

EDIT: Oh god im a bleedin' idiot sometimes. i got my Space Hulks mixed up! its not the Teardown version ive been trying to play - its the http://sourceforge.net/projects/hulk/ version (which is also the one that my comments earlier in the thread were about).

timewizard wrote:Lord M,
No need to make a backup, I have a saved copy of the zip file if anyone is interested.

ive just decided to have a go, and im having problems:

spacehulk
Component 'COMDLG32.CX' or one of its dependencies not correctly registered: a file is missing or invalid
OK

:(

any ideas? :?:

EDIT: im unzipping my sourceforge files again to see if this fixes the problem...

EDIT2: still not working (same error message). checked the readme and found this:
Runtime Requirements
===================

SpaceHulk-SP runs at 1024x768, 24 or 32 bit colour

SpaceHulk-SP requires the following Microsoft software, which can be downloaded from the SpaceHulk-SP homepage
at http://home.swiftdsl.com.au/~dtaylor/spacehulksp.html

Visual Basic 6 runtime
COMCTL32.OCX (tested with 6.0.81.5)
COMDLG32.OCX (tested with 6.0.84.18)
MSCOMCTL.OCX (tested with 6.0.88.62)

Check the Windows system32 directory for these OCX files. For any OCX that is not already present, copy the file to the Windows system32 directory and issue the following command for each copied file:

regsvr32 c:\windows\system32\xxx.ocx

where xxx is the filename

but the website is no longer there. anyone able to help?

cheers :)

~ Tim
p.s. bad news at the teardown site: http://www.teardown.se/

Pass I'm afraid, its not the greatest detail ,whose telling you that the game?
Could it be a vbruntime problem (visual basic 6 helps some games to play a bit like java helps some games to play on your internet browser).
Thats the easiest non lethal advice I can blindly give with out much more info.

I said on warseer a few weeks back that it looked like a scrap over 3rd party rights (I was kind of prophetic)

EDIT wooo. sounds like another correct blind assumption, I'll be back ni aminute with a link to vbruntime files

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/290887
Spacks link is so much bigger than mine

Those are VB6 components. You can get them here: http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/deta ... laylang=en

Try this: http://www.ageofstrife.com/dl/controls.zip

I just built that installer from VB6 with those 3 components. It appears the COMCTL32.OCX is not from VB6, it's a VB5 component.

EDIT: I downloaded the source code and checked the components, it's definitely the VB5 OCX that is being used. Also 2 files are missing from the source code :(

EDIT2: Found the missing source files in the patches folder :)

Tim, if you'd checked the Patches on the SF site you'd have found this: http://sourceforge.net/tracker/index.ph ... tid=577456

A full installer including the OCX files :P

Of course now may i point you to the first sentance when I brought the new(RIP) one to your attention " I had one ages back that needed vbrun times and a lot of imagination"
Has it had a game engine update at all.. new levels or anything?

Check the patches folder on Source Forge - there's a map editor, new genestealer and marine graphics, 64bit tiles to replace the 32bit ones to make the maps larger, and a few other bits and pieces. The game engine itself has not been touched in a few years.

Now, given that the source files are available and it's all written in VB6, tweaking it might not be that hard. I'm certainly going to look into it as I've got VB6 at home and it's the language I use for nearly all the programming I do at work :)

ive only really got 2 problems with it:
- sometimes when you try to click a square, instead of selecting that square for whatever action you are trying to perform, it moves the map (which can be a bit frustrating). you have to click pretty close to the centre of a square to select it, and if this could be made a little less sensitive then that would be nice
- when you increase the number of blips, it sometimes crashes the game when too many pile up around the exits (it gives an error message - something about line length, IIRC). if this could be fixed it would be great (sometimes its fun to get completly swamped and fight your way out)

i cant think of anything else off the top of my head that needs fixing (im really happy with this game). thoughts? :?:

cheers :)

I'll take a look at those two issues. The "line length" error is likely quite easy to fix, probably just needs some bounds checking. The clicking tiles one might require a bit more work depending on how the click handling is done, but should be possible too.
